Ok.... so I’ve got a question... would it be acceptable to use something like bacon grease? The reason is I have some lab glass (brand new never used for chemicals) and I want to use it for a still to make drinkable ethanol. I want to use a grease to prevent seizure of the glass... but I want it to be food safe... Thoughts?

bacon grease spoils with time so a synthetic grease (vacuum grease is usually short-chain silicone) is advised. I would say something like lab-grade hydrocarbon grease will probably suffice. When the setup is together and in operation the grease shouldn't come into contact with anything unless you've squished some out of the joint from using too much. Normal hydrocarbon grease is not soluble in ethanol afaik so it should work fine, just be sure to use clean grease with each run.

food compatible, msds says it is harmless, yet molycote sells G-5032 G-4501 for 200USD a cartridge? Are they crazy? Crazy marketing?

are you sure this is enough for a perfect vacuum? no air through the glasses at all? only with that little?

yes. I work in a lab, we regularly use silicone grease in this amount to hold off 20-torr vacuum.
