Thanks for this video! I mention the Colecovision to people from time to time and am usually greeted with a puzzled look. It really flew under the radar in a lot of ways, unfortunately. Dad got us a Colecovision for Christmas the year it came out. We only ever had a handful of games for it (Donkey Kong, Turbo, Zaxxon, LadyBug and Smurf), but with the jump in performance compared to our 2600, we really didn't mind. It is a great system, and I am lucky enough to still have it complete and functional.

When I was about 5 or 6 years old I guess, my father brought home a Videopac G7000 (Odyssey 2). We played that for only a month or so, and then he traded it in for a ColecoVision. We were all blown away, the graphics were mind boggling. Nothing would ever top it. As Coleco was already tits up when we bought it (although I'm not sure that was really known in Europe) some stores sold games quite cheaply. We had 20-25 games or so when we sold it at a flee market to raise money for our first MSX computer (very similar to ColecoVision in terms of hardware). I showed my parents a few weeks ago what a PAL ColecoVision and a VideoPac does nowadays. Even if I knew that in advance, I'd never have sold that ColecoVision. I'm so damn nostalgic for it! Still I've not bought me one back, as it's a bit expensive for a gimmick. Still I'd place the ColecoVision slightly above the NES in my favorite early 80s console list. I played Venture a lot, Cosmic Avenger, Rock 'n Rope, Pepper II, and we played the hell out of Frenzy. Tarzan was my favorite I think though, quite an ambitious game, with a lot to it. Thanks for this trip down memory lane again John!

Covered in other videos, the CV was a supposed to be the NES, or vice versa. Basically a falling out in an attempted deal with Nintendo made Coleco go with an MSX-like design instead for the CV The CV could have competed well with the NES through the rest of the 80s had it continued to receive new ports and console specifics games like Super MArio. Lowering costs of RAM/ROM and add-in chips for improving sound/gfx like later NES carts had, plus save-game/scores on the carts with battery backup and/or an Expansion Module for the CV, would have shown what the CV could do post 1985

One needs to put these in the context of 1982 when the CV was released- these graphics were a HUGE jump over all the other consoles of the day- 2600, INTV, Odyssey. Yes, by 1985+, the NES/SMS and others could do even better, but for the period '82-85, the CV was a HUGE jump in capability for video game consoles. A solid 3+ year run where no other system could touch it for game quality, expansion capabilities, controller add ons, etc. The 5200 was just a repackaged Atari 8 bit computer, released in the late 70s. NOt bad, and a fun retro console, but the graphics and sound and expandability of the CV bested the 5200 consistently. The CV introduced gamers to arcade games no other system would port- Cosmic Avenger, MousTRap, Pepper II, Space Panic, Lady Bug.

I like John cuz he seems like he’s my generation.. ColecoVision was my first console and I’ll never forget my first 3 games were Donkey Kong of course, Centipede & Gorf.. My 4th was Venture upon my neighbors advice.. I believe this console was much better than it’s peers because it appeared to have better sound and graphics but also played Atari games with the little adaptor.. There’s only one issue I have with really old systems in that it didn’t save your high scores.. We used to write em down especially with Coleco mini arcade

I don't remember the name. We also had the wheel. Would play Dukes of Hazzard though I never understood the goal... Yes!! You revisited the ColecoVision! My fence-sharing neighbor had one whilst I only obsessed with "Atari" (2600) in 1982. When I saw Donkey Kong, I flipped! It is a super system! Many years later, having a wave of nostalgia during my mid-nineties college experience, I scavenged every thrift store in San Diego County. After at least a dozen stores and 3/4 of a gas tank, I visited a repurposed Lucky or Food Basket on Claremont Blvd. After nearly an hour of scouring through the store, I headed toward the exit, but narrowly noticed more junk piled up atop the end-cap displays adjacent to the rotating-disc-system checkout counter. To my great happiness, there was not one, but there were THREE dusty, recycled ColecoVision bundles high on the pile. I was shamefully self-talked into only buying two, but reconsidered, and greedily purchased all three systems. Today I have somewhere around 10: some on the bench, some in the box. Due to constant PCB breakage at the controller port, I've had to revert to an old, unmodded RF CV system to keep gaming going. Cheers John (and all ColecoVision fans)!

Frenzy and Pepper II we're absolutely BRILLIANT in the specific context of being VERY faithful arcade ports. Donkey Kong was a flawed, but still REALLY fun version that captured the original's charm in a way that went beyond graphics and sound. Donkey Kong Jr was even BETTER in that same respect. Other games off the top of my head that were faithful arcade ports? Ladybug, it could be argued, was in some respects legitimately BETTER than the arcade version. Carnival was a GREAT port. Looping was a really good port and an underrated and unique kind of shooter. Venture was also pretty close to perfect. I had a WORLD of admiration at the time that Coleco was WAY behind the curve on getting arcade licenses, with Atari already having Space Invaders, Galaxian. Pac-Man AND his wife and son, Missile Command, Asteroids, Centipede, and Defender. Coleco got Donkey Kong, his son, Zaxxon, Turbo, and the very difficult to port successfully Dragon's Lair. But they went out and found SO many hidden gems like Ladybug and Mister Do's Castle that really were TERRIFIC games. They did an unbelievable job in that respect.

Colecovision Star Trek is the best home version, period. It beats the 2600, 5200, Atari 800, TI, and Apple II ports. Play with the Super Action controller for an authentic “arcade” experience. Donkey Kong on the CV was iconic, but the Atari 800 ate Colecovision’s lunch with it’s port.

As it continued, I realized it was Rites of Spring (Sacre du Printemps), a ballet that reportedly instigated riots in the streets of Paris at its premiere. Now THAT was an obscure reference. I began gaming with a Fairchild Channel F video game console. My next system was a Commodore VIC-20, followed by an ATARI 2600. Then, I finally arrived at the Colecovision, one of my favorite systems. I many of the games highlighted in this video, plus many others in my collection. The games I did not own were Xonox Artillery Duel, H.E.R.O., and Star Trek. I still have my Colecovision in my possession, and it still works. Along with the main console, I still have the Expansion Module #1 (Atari 2600 Cartridge Adapter), Expansion Module #2 (Steering/Racing Wheel Controller w/Turbo the game), and the Super Action Controller Set (Super Action Baseball cartridge included). I also had the Expansion Module #3 (Family Computer Module), but unfortunately, I do not know whatever happened to it. Even with the system still functioning, the sad thing is that I am missing the majority of my game cartridges. Oh well, perhaps someday I'll run across some I can pick up. If I looked, I know I could locate some for sale, but I just have other matters to which I should tend. There were many great games for the Colecovision, and I'm sure there were many I never played. I can recall being excited for a game called Sewer Sam, which I never got a chance to play, or even see footage of game play until recently here on KZitem. I would need a complete list of the games which were in my collection to be positive, but I believe one of my favorites to be a game called Montezuma's Revenge. I viewed a video Let's Play of Rocky for Colecovision, and the players did not realize the game required the Super Action Controllers, so watching them trying to figure out how to control the game was entertainingly irritating. Half of the comments were "Hey, you need the Super Action Controllers for that game." Thanks for the flashback!!!
