I had been preparing for the Great American Eclipse for at least two years ahead of time, and watching weather forecasts carefully up to the minute I had to leave. Weather was still looking good for the Smokies, so I headed south on 81 on Saturday afternoon, heading over to the Blue Ridge Parkway on Sunday for the final leg of the trip to the Smoky Mountains National Park.
I was up quite early and was about a mile from the Cades Cove gate wating for the loop to open. I pulled into a secluded parking area along Sparks Lane where it seemed there would be some good options for shooting. I met a couple of other photographers and as the time drew near, had a wonderful time sharing a quiet spot along a gated access road with them.
I have never experienced anything as stunning as this total solar eclipse. I feel fortunate to have been able to record some of the experinece, while thoroughly enjoying the experience at the same time. I hope this clip helps convey just how amazing it was to be there, watching this in real time - through glasses during the transition each way, and by naked eye during totality.
