I made this comment at the beginning of the video and now I'm correcting what I said haha I think it would be really cool for you to make a video teaching how to make different types of brushes with what we already have, I have a lot of difficulty with that

I highly recommend Tyler's Mentorship I wouldn't be at an advanced level if it wasn't for all of Tyler's help. I got there quickly too I came to Tyler at the beginner level and repeated his Mentorship multiple times because I wanted to learn more and more and push to the next level. I learnt more from Tyler than I would learn from any online courses that I took before like for example Noah Bradley's art camp and udemy courses, they can only get you so far before you get completely stuck. With Tyler's Mentorship though you are constantly growing because when you do get stuck Tyler will show you where you are going wrong by doing paint overs of your work to teach you techniques and disciplines that you can adopt and then complete your images with confidence and have a professional piece for your portfolio.

@@angel79892 certainly! I'd love to but it's very difficult for me because of the dollar (I'm Brazilian, and we're in crisis) at the moment I'm trying to see if I make commissions to try to buy courses and things like that, even though I can study online, sometimes it's missing that little help, if I don't do it for that reason, if it wasn't for that I would certainly have no doubts.

when you said some people fall into the trap of relying on their references 100%, that really clicked with me. i think I've always been vaguely aware that I'm too dependent on my references and i always end up playing with the curves and colours in photoshop after I'm done painting because my paintings always finish with a pretty flat look to them. I'm really trying to figure out how colour and light works and videos like these are super helpful!

This was amazing to watch and so informative. I like what you said about how getting everything to a decent level is important and thinking about perspective, anatomy character looks, color and light. Messing those things up in an image can throw the whole image off. There is so much to think about but if everything is cohesive the image works. Takes years to master all the elements of making a great image but that's what makes being an artist a great thing. What is amazing is how much you teach us, the knowledge in your videos really does spark something to get past the plataue whatever level we are at there is always something in your videos that helps so much so thank you for making these youtube videos Tyler they are very inspirational.

I can not so much distinguish between mass and form, to me one seems like a variation of the other. Maybe that is because my strengths definitely lie on line. But recently I found that having both line and mass/form in a painting is not convincing and looks somehow dumb. I think targeting either line, form or mass more than the others is a good point! Thanks!

Awesome video! Just wanted to give a little correction, mass refers to "light vs dark" not "light vs shadow", which means a mass dominant scene only consists of different local values of different objects. Another term often used for mass is "Notan".

i tend to see a lack of storytelling in concept art and art in general, they just put a scene down on the canvas and think its done.

Love your advice about how your weakest portfolio piece highlights you on your bad day. This is a very humanistic approach that I don’t hear talked about much. Are certain fields more critical of this or more weary of weaker work than others?

Hey Tyler, great video! I struggle with identifying colors during color studies as I got overly comfortable with the eyedropper tool right as I started art. On top of consistent practice is there any tip that you have that could help with getting colors down?

Might be a bit too specific.. I would suggest looking up tutorials and doing studies on each of the individual components (horse/animal anatomy, hair, feathers etc.) and then composing your own scene and putting it together.

Great video, I definitely have a lot to think about! I do wonder: What are your thoughts on rendering first and then altering color afterward? This has been my method for a long time (focusing on values first) and this video has me wondering if I am hindering myself in anyway or if there are any drawbacks to this.
@TylerEdlin84

Yeah I don’t do that often though there’s specific situations where that may help if you need a variation or something. I build up color with a specific end point in mind. That ways it’s focused and rich

I have a really tough time adding in characters to an environment piece like you added Link and Zelda, any advice on this? I tend to make them too detailed or too shaded if that makes any sense? Like they don't fit the same depth as everything else

Hmmm try to make the background at least 5 times more detailed than the character, it works for me

Also painting the background before shading in the characters is important so that the characters actually look like they are one with the background

i think you can try to incorporate the characters more into the scene with the help of ambient lighting. for example, a little bit of blue-ish tone on a character standing under the sky, or some red in the highlights if they're near a red wall. don't make the lights and shadows only black and white and grey.
