Binoculars have been an important part of my astronomy tool kit since I first got into the hobby due to the good advice in Terence Dickinson's Nightwatch book. I love binocular astronomy. This winter while traveling from Canada to Florida, I had room for a new pair of 10x50 Vortex Diamondback binoculars in my luggage and I got three good nights of observing some gems in Puppis, Columba and Vela that aren't visible from Canada. I even stayed up really late one night to see Omega Centauri and Centaurus A. Whether it's helping me find objects with my telescope or just enjoying the binocular views, it is always worth it to have them out.

I have a small pair of Vortex 8x35 diamondback binoculars that work better for astronomy than the small size would suggest. I also use them for a wide range of activities like birding, plane spotting, and sightseeing. What I need most is actually a tripod. Those two pieces of equipment are a great way to get into astronomy. I would argue that telescopes come later, after you've gotten familiar with astronomy as a hobby and the night sky. It's not for everyone and you may discover you prefer binocular astronomy.

I got the wife a pair of 10x42 Diamondbacks for birding and after trying them at night. Holy cow how good and sharp they are! Very light too.

It is binoculars to observe closer constellations with wider field of view you must have, after use zoom 10X-22X/50mm to split double stars and next will be D 114mm reflector.

I've used the celestron skymaster 25x70 for the longest time... until my 12" solid tube dobsonian came. She may be girthy but, I wouldn't trade for anything... except for up on a 12" goto unit. The 25x70 is a sweet pair but,highly reccomend using an all metal bino adapter (like the svbony) & a heavy duty tripod.

Thanks for the recommendation to everyone! I've got a 12 inch dobsonian on order that should be in within a few weeks! Excited to move from an 8 inch to 12 inch telescope.

If you could try the links again on your phone and a PC I would appreciate that just to let me know. Also, if you search telescope.com for Orion UltraView 10x50 Wide Angle it should take you to the ones shown in this video.

Do you use a tripod for 10x70??.. I want to purchase a 10x50 for my daughter for hand held, but I think 10x70 would be great, but everyone says they must be on a mount.
@longlakeshore

@@Jamie-em2jp Get a mount for any viewing longer than a few minutes per target - no matter which binocs you use. 10X70 is the largest I use handheld and I do mount them when looking at objects for more than a few minutes.

I find 10 power to be to shaky. I like 7x50 because you get a brighter and wider view. 7x50 have been called night glasses for a good reason. I used to be in law enforcement and with 7x50's I could read license plates in the dark. That is why the navy uses them also. Some Navy binoculars are 6 power. I got a nice pair of Celestron SkyMaster 25X100 Binoculars for astronomy for $300 dollars. But the tripod and mount cost 3 times as much.

Im trying to decide on these or the Bushnell Legacy which are similar ,for my 15 yr old...Any thoughts? She is totally new to looking at sky.

They look very similar. If your 15 year old is new to astronomy I would go for which ever one is the most affordable for where you live. If they are similar in price I would go with the pair from Orion.
