GREAT BRITAIN: "No other word was used more often!" Prime Minister Keir Starmer gives four-minute speech
In his first appearance as head of government, the new British Prime Minister Keir Starmer promised a return to stability and growth. The people have chosen change, he said.
The country needs a fresh start, the 61-year-old Labour politician stressed in Downing Street. "Our work is urgent and we are starting today," he announced. But he also admitted that this cannot be achieved in the short term and showed understanding for the political disillusionment in the country.
"This wound, this lack of trust, can only be healed by actions, not words," Starmer said. He added: "My government will fight until you can believe again."
Overwhelming victory for Labour
Starmer had previously been greeted by hundreds of party friends and supporters in Downing Street to great cheers. His Labour Party had won an overwhelming victory in the parliamentary election. With at least 412 seats, it has more than three times as many seats as the Conservatives, who now have to sit on the opposition benches after 14 years in government.
However, Labour owes its election victory primarily to a collapse in support for the Tories. After almost all votes had been counted, Labour's share of the vote was just 34 percent. The fact that it still managed to secure a comfortable majority of seats in the House of Commons is mainly due to the British majority voting system, in which only the candidate with the most votes in each constituency enters parliament.
There is no great enthusiasm for the new head of government, as was the case when Labour last took power under Tony Blair in 1997. Commentators have therefore warned that the mood in the country could soon turn against the new government.
