Developed with an idea to bring back the concept of inclusive living spaces, the JSW Housing at Vasind, Maharashtra, utilizes its architectural design to create an interactive environment. The complex has a green courtyard that sits centrally and acts a common area between its four residential blocks. On the exteriors, these blocks are designed with a series of columns & screens that create an interesting pattern of light & shadow, while also providing a connection with the outside environment. On the interiors though, the houses are designed with multipurpose entrance areas; Separated bath and WC areas that provide a spacious design allowing simultaneous use. On the ground level, houses have small staircase area that provides a space for outside interaction, while the houses on upper levels are open to a front corridor for the same. The Staircases at the end of each block are twisted and open out to provide a more welcoming feel to it. Drawing inspiration from traditional Chawls and putting them in a contemporary design, Quaid Doongerwala from DCOOP, Mumbai has been able to create a new living environment that helps residents' to establish a connection with each other more openly. Watch the video as he explains his idea in more detail.
