Posted with permission. The level was right at 3.00. There is a very powerful current pushing into the partially undercut wall and she got pinned in that exact spot first in her boat, then out of it. She did a great job avoiding panic, kicking off the wall to keep her head above water, and maintaining situational awareness while I got out with a rope. I wasted 10 to 15 seconds while getting out trying to communicate to the other rescuer about corralling my boat. I was worried about a situation where she flushed on her own or I messed up getting out, leaving me as a second swimmer and unable to help, but if that had happened the rest of the team could have handled it so I should have just gotten out immediately to get her a rope ASAP. At the end of the day I was glad we had a solid crew out there that day to help out- things can turn bad quickly in class V even for solid boaters, and even outside of the main moves or crux or the rapids it is important to be aware of additional potential hazards. Her paddle stayed there for two days until some other paddlers saw it in the foam pile eddy.
