On the 3rd of June 2012, the 9.5 ton bell in the tower of the Wills Memorial Building at the University of Bristol was rung for 20 minutes as part of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II .
All across the nation bellringers have been adding their loud contributions to the festivities to mark the Queen's 60 years on the throne, the most high profile of which being the remarkable appearance of a full sized set of bells on a boat, at the front of the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant.
Bristol has a rather special asset in Great George, a bell weighing 9.5 tons hanging in the tower of the Wills Memorial Building. Cast in 1924 by John Taylor of Loughborough he is the 6th largest bell in the UK, and hangs in a concrete frame at the base of the octagonal top section of the tower.
Great George sounds the hours, and on special occasions he is swung by hand which produces a much louder and rich sound from him.
