The nostalgia. I remember playing this back in the day. I would say this is the game that really cemented my love for the RPG genre. It was a great game, fun, with lots of humor, some of it blatant tongue in cheek. It's amazing that they didn't do a sequel when so many lesser games did. The soundtrack was amazing especially for a gameboy game.

'This isn't one of those fufu RPGs is my new favourite line from a manual! And thank you for taking the time to read the manual, a lot of reviewers don't bother and write off games without knowing how to play. i couldn't agree more, i like how this game didn't take itself seriously a lot of times, along with some scenes and the food themed names, that ending was especially funny, like you said, the fact that they also let you see all the monsters stats at the end along with other stuff was a nice touch. The combat system was a fresh take, although i wish they worked a little on the sell option at the shops, since having a lot of space inventory is nice, but it coul also be a double-edge sword if you are not checking it regularly, still not that big of a problem. The soundtrack was okay and it had some nice tunes, although being honest there are other more generic like rpgs with amazing music compared to this one, but it still fits. Nice review!.
@hungrygoriya
3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I think the lightheartedness overall was a huge draw for me. I also appreciated how much inventory space there was after playing other games like Final Fantasy Legend or even Earthbound where things are so much ore restricted! Selling can always be better in my opinion and I think the best selling system I've ever seen is The 7th Saga where they tell you the trade value up front when you upgrade anything! So smart!

My grandfather was Japanese so I once asked him and he just said "everybody likes food." I don't know if that covers it but it's definitely more common there than here, at least Speaking of The Frog For Whom The Bell tolls, have you played that one? I loved this game! It honestly fired on pretty much all cylinders. If it had one flaw, it's the fact that I didn't enjoy having to map spells to the D pad. For instance, if I needed a healing spell, I usually could only use a high level spell that ate up too much MP or a lower healing spell that didn't heal enough. Still nearly perfect and a must play, though.
@hungrygoriya

That's very true. The MP meter felt pretty limited. I felt the buffs really helped towards the end game, but I barely made it out of the final boss fight giving it all I had!

Limiting inventory is one of the worst things a game can do as far as I'm concerned. Especially in a game where there's so little explanation about what things do, you know? Many games could take a hint or two from this one! I hope you can find it when you get around to looking. I think it's on the rarer side but totally worth a play!

Few games have pulled me in with the title music as you put it . The original final fantasy was one along with dragon's lair for the Nes ( which while a horrible game had an amazing soundtrack). @@hungrygoriya I think I wrote in another of your videos some of it's major flaws so I won't repeat them. I just beat it out of stubbornness and the fact that I worked for like a month to save up for it when it came out. "Great Gluttony might have been a better name (than Great Greed)" If you think about it, the deadly sins of Gluttony and Greed kind of go hand in hand. Greed is about coveting something while Gluttony is about having unnecessary amounts of excess. If you're greedy you'll more than likely be gluttonous too. I do get your point though, but I'd have to argue that if a game is gonna be called "great Gluttony" then it better star the most gluttonous Nintendo character of all: Kirby. (Or maybe King DeDeDe since he DID steel all the food in Dreamland that one time.) I'm definitely gonna give this game a try.

Microwave is just... *the best* name, oh man! How come Namco doesn't name RPG characters like that anymore? If there's any justice in the World, the character in Tales of Arise or Blue Protocol will have names that can stand up next to the likes of Microwave, Truffle and Cup Cake... or enemies that strike as much fear into our hearts as Pudinhed and Weiner XD This looked really, really interesting. Lots of quality and innovation from a GB RPG. I don't think I've ever seen a battle system like that, and it definitely looks like a neat way to inject some action into an RPG (and the focused one-on-one encounters seem like a good way to frame everything on the tiny GB screen). Though it kinda reminds me a bit of _Dragon Quest Swords_ on the Wii, actually, for some reason. It's just so fresh - seems like some modern RPGs - maybe even VR ones - could learn a lot from this. Modernize and expand the battle system and it would probably still be really engaging today. Just really fascinating to see it in here in an obscure GB game. Hey btw, what were all those GB games showed off at 11:55? Can't make out that back row at all (though I assume the TAITO game on the top right is 'Knight's Quest' by default). Then it's Metal-something and Ultima in the next row. Then Rolan's Curse, James Bond 007, Dragon Warrior 1 + 2, Rolan's Curse 2, and Survival Kids. The final row has the FF Legends games, Great Greed here, FF Adventure, ???? and Legend of the River King. I'm so curious about those I can't identify.
@hungrygoriya

This game was totally awesome and innovative, and I haven't played anything quite like it. The enemy names cracked me right up when I was playing through, and there were so many other great ones I couldn't squeeze in here, unfortunately. So the games are (Back row, L-R) Sword of Hope, Knight's Quest, Metal Walker, Ultima... you got all the next row, and that one before Legend of the River King is Azure Dreams. It's a dungeon crawler that also had a release on PS1, neither of which I've had the opportunity to play yet.

Gameboy Rpgs always have a unique charm not matched by other systems. This one looks very interesting and the combat system sounds similar to Thousand Arms over on the PS1. You also have to love the odd naming schemes localizers employed way back when. Great Greed sounds like nonsense compared to the actual title, but that was just how things were done at the time.
@hungrygoriya
5 ай бұрын
Oh Thousand Arms is similar? I'll have to look into playing that one soon then!
@sneakyskunk1

@@hungrygoriya Thousand Arms is very much like this one. It is more a comedy than a serious Rpg story. I wont spoil anything, but the combat really is more or less the same as Great Greed. Only one character engages the enemy, and the other two party members contribute to combat by buffing the character engaged in combat. They also apply de-buffs to enemies. It is important to note that you can swap out the character fighting at any time with either of their supporting party members. If you are a fan of late 1990's to early 2000 anime comedies you will probably enjoy this one. It does end rather abruptly though. Hopefully you will enjoy it!

I found the game to be easy and the story was really good though some stuff are really odd like the record player dungeon. But this game is as good as you're going to get on gameboy or for this time that the game came out. The only thing that one should know when playing the game is maybe use that gamfaq guide cause I struggled beating the last boss until I used power and had rng on my side. Didn't want to grind more levels and made the mistake of selling my 2 useful skills that I didn't feel like they did anything. Luckily you can rebuy power in the last dungeons shop from what I remember. Kinda outdated game but a good game. Your review is what made me play the game. Great vid!
