@@massimo79mmm yeah... a 20+ year welder here too... originally company in house trained as a production welder (MIG, with some more MIG, and an extra order of MIG... heavy on the MIG) and then went to a vocational school when I wanted to expand my skill set... because production welding isn't bad... but it just doesn't pay the bills as well as I wanted to pay them. lol. But anyway... I was trained to pull/drag straight lines or do a whip and pause in stick... and I remember the instructor showing us this way and I questioned it... the answer stuck in my head because it was so obvious... and yet... kind of dumb... because if you understand what welding does... you realize using proper work angles takes care of the issue... As the instructor explained to me... The reason is to make sure you get equal heat on both sides of the weld to make sure fusion is correct. I didn't argue... I was paying him to teach me and it wasn't a hill I was willing to die on... but I suppose it helps with newer welders who may not have as refined a sense of body position and technique as old timers.

If you are wanting a bigger fillet weld with a single pass, do not weave, use a bigger diameter rod, by weaving in this manner you are risking a lack of root penetration. Also just dragging the electrode you will have straighter looking toes of the weld which will look more pleasing than wobbly toe edges
@wjbushjr
8 ай бұрын
So bigger diameter, followed by simply dragging the electrode is better than trying to be pretty.

You’ll notice how his travel speed picked up dramatically towards the second half of the pass . This is due to Rod getting hot, you’d think you’d want to stay consistent yet you need to get a feel and habit of watching this.
