As a Knicks fan, i loved the fact that we were beating them every year after 1997.I have to admit that i totally enjoyed these battles. It was a war, a defensive oriented war. I hope ESPN will make a 30 for 30 about this rivalry.

I feel part of the reason the 90s Knicks didn't win the title was because of the rivalries they were involved in. It seemed to me that they played their best basketball against their rivals that it didn't transfer to the next round if they beat those rivals.
@toddsands6000

KWCline91 - I have to agree with you. I often felt that with the exception of the 1999 season, the Knicks were often spent after winning exhausting playoff series games primarily against the Miami Heat and Indiana Pacers. Likewise it was possible that the Heat were totally spent after beating the Knicks in 1997 only to find themselves down 3-0 against the Bulls. The basketball world knew the Heat would lose to the Bulls in 1997. But the team was flat eventually losing to MJ's Bulls 4-1. The same thing could be said about the Pacers although the Pacers were an amazing competitive team during the 1990s led by Reggie Miller, Rik Smits, the Davis Brothers and company.
@toddsands6000

Ulysses432 - I think you may be referring to the 1993 Season. And you're right, the Bulls had #23. And Scottie Pippen was the best half court ball defender at that time. I still remember how intense that game 5 was at the Garden. It wasn't the best played game between both teams. But the intensity was through the roof for the players and fans alike. I had a friendly bet with a Bulls fan at that time on absolutely believing that the Knicks were going to finally overcome the Bulls. Afterwards, I was $20 lighter.

This comment makes zero sense since it was one of our rivals usually taking us out where it’d be the bulls heat or pacers. We had our shot up 3-2 in 94 vs the rockets but we blew it and we had no shot without Ewing in 99 vs the spurs and the twin towers.
@KWCline91

joey smooth that’s part of the reason. If you were to advance passing a rival, you might run into another, which would lead to another grueling series. Problem was in 94 you ran into three seven game series and ran into a team that was your mirror in the finals. Could you and should you have won? Sure you could. But at the end, you just ran out of gas.

Watching that breaks my heart. I remember being like 11 or 12 and seeing Jamal Mashburn pass up an open shot to Clarence Weatherspoon, then Weatherspoon hesitated, faked a shot and stepped to the left and took a contested shot. 2 open shots were passed up to end everything.

Because of the Riley connection, and all the fights, I think Miami's more hated rival in the 1990's was New York. Chicago and Miami played in 1996, but Miami was a lowly 8-seed and got swept in 3, so there was only one kind of memorable playoff series between Miami and Chicago (1997, 4-1 Bulls). They also played in 1992, but that was a different era, and was also a sweep. On the other hand, Miami and NY played from 1997-2000, and every series went the distance, and the fights were plenty.

The Danilovic in the Garden game, Hardaway vs. Starks, Ewing vs. Zo, PJ Brown flinging Charlie Ward into the third row, Zo vs. LJ with Van Gundy humping Zo's leg, Allen Houston's Runner, Mashburn not taking the shot... But I think sooner or alter, we will see a season where they meet each other again in the playoffs down the stretch, and a new younger rivalry will be ignited.

Theres 2 moments about this rivalry that have always stood out in my head, that could basically summarize this rivalry from a Miami stand point. One of them was shown in this video with Riley leaning against the wall. The other one was in 99 or 00, I think, right as either Allan Houston made the shot, or Clarence Weatherspoon missed it, Riley closed his eyes right on the court and didn't move or open them for like a minute. Those 2 moments to me have always epitomized the feelings of that time.

That was a regular season game. Crazy stuff can happen in a single game with low stakes in the regular season (Rex Chapman did go nuts shooting in that game). You can't compare that to a playoff series. But yeah, the suspensions clearly helped Miami. Not to be outdone, though, the Knicks got the Heat back by baiting Alonzo Mourning to get suspended for game 5 the next season. As far as I'm concerned, things evened out.

But in 1997 they had more fire power on Offense with LJ and Houston and with Starks coming of the bench. Is a Heat fan ill admit that in 97 The Knicks was the much superior team. in really in 1999 is well. Yeah The Knicks was a 8th seed but they were much better then just a 8th seed. I think The Knicks shouldn't have traded Mark Jackson for Charles Smith I mean come on Smith numbers went down every year when he was in New York, Doc Rivers wasn't bad though but still you get rid of Jackson and Xaiver McDaniel for Smith??? come on.
@lchris6997

The '97 Knicks were clearly the best, John Starks went from having to carry a heavy burden as #2 option to being a 6th man in '97, and Starks was still a very good player in '97 too, that's how good they were. The Bulls probably would've lost to the Knicks that year since what held the Knicks back against them in the past was sharp shooters and they finally had that. Unfortunately the Heat had to play dirty late in Game 5 and mess everything up. The '97 Bulls title was w/o a doubt their luckiest one. They best team behind them in the EC in '97 was not the Heat, it was clearly the Knicks, regular season record didn't mean much to a veteran team like the Knicks in the playoffs.

I'm a Heat fan and these battles were special but also frustrating. In those days the Knicks were the scrappier team even though I felt Miami had the better talent. The Knicks were built for the deeper rounds in that era of playoff basketball. It was like the Knicks made it personal against Riley. "Yeah you left us but we still beat you." It was 3-1 overall but I think the best moment for me was when Miami came back from 3-1 to win 4-3 in one particular series. That one was special. I'm sure it was Knicks fans' worst moment lol.

Mourning would've been the all-time leading scorer if he played power forward? I mean, you can't possibly be serious. Mourning was a center in college. He was 6'11 260lbs. The guy WAS a center. Also to say he would've overpowered Malone, and Barkley is ridiculous. He had a hard time overpowering Larry Johnson, when LJ had a bad back. Mourning did hold his own, but Ewing was better, and that was my point.

And dont say Ewing was blessed with Natural abilities cause Zo was too, there is a reason he was the 2nd pick overall and that's only cause Shaq was in the draft. You said Chalmers and Beas would lead the team but they still wouldn't be good enough to make the playoffs. You cant just say Wade isn't in Miami to fit into your argument. Thata what I meant. Also, no..I dont think the Bulls or Knicks would make it without Jordan or Ewing. Thats the point I was making.
