One thing I'm fond of regarding character destinies - ambiguity. "Well, your character is destined to stand, weapon in hand, over the broken and dying body of a god." No mention of whether said god would be killed by the character, or which god. It could be the god of circumstantial evidence, for example... ;)

My approach is different. In my opinion, there are three forces which decide what happens to a character: their will (player actions), destiny (the GM) and randomness (dicerolls). If a player approaches me about wantting to hav their character destined to become the goblin king, I#ll ask the group if they want to play that particular story and make the rise of the goblin king a cntral pot element. But usually, if you want your character to become king, you better play a character who works towards that goal or you find another player who wants to play a character who wants to play kingmaker. I find that characters often develop goals and other paths as they go. In hindsight, this will look like destiny.

just want to say that I really enjoy your videos . Now when it comes to character destiny I'll have to say that I generally do not let my players pick a Destiny for their characters per se . now don't get me wrong if we are at game zero and we are figuring out what type of campaign we want and all the players want this Grand Destiny for the party then I may run with it as long as it's nothing super silly . The way I work that sort of thing is more character goals as opposed to character destiny if one of my players tells me that he wants his character to become a king eventually that's awesome . I love my players to have long-term goals but the character will have to earn it . I won't make any special changes to the world that make him able to just become a king because I put it in the story . he will have to figure out how to do that himself or herself as the case may be . for example , I ran a campaign long time ago we're all of the party wanted to become God's eventually , and luckily for me I was using the Dungeons & Dragons Immortal rules for the Divine beings in the game at the time . the campaign lasted roughly sixteen years and the characters eventually not only became gods but because I had the immortal rules became some if the most powerful Divine beings Within that universe . but they did have to earn it . just my 2 cents hopefully I wasn't too long-winded .

Agreed, I use Roll 20 for the visuals and Discord for the verbal (the roll 20's audio cuts out, and I'm not sure discord has maps). It works really well. Also, BBRPG, if you are doing this, please send me a message via youtube with the game and edition you want to play. I'd love to join up.

Our group uses Discord and a software called Fantasy Grounds. Disadvantage between that and Roll20 is FG isn't free, but you get what you pay for. It goes really well for our Pathfinder games.

As a GM you want that video? Or should I make a tale of caution for players to not demand too much? I had a similar problem a few years back, and know of many GM's who are stuck in either - yes, or flat out no mode.

Ok really messed up to be honest. I am the "nice" kind of GM : I always try to say yes to players, hate killing them, and have big issues in limiting the number of players i take since i play mostly with friends. I was wondering if you had tips to manage players demands, a way to say no or to find solutions without just cutting players off.

Hmm what I’ve done is rewrite the rules so it’s easier to understand.👈🏻Home brew. Because it’s all too confusing. Made it so: That player character gets 3000 credits to use for character creation for weapons gear equipment for his /her own chosen character class(s). Because a blaster and vibrosword isn’t enough. Secondly ur character will be disgruntled all them because your xp will be so low. So 200 xp is good because some species is low or so low that you can barely afford a talent(s). Ur limited to the ships. So with that. I based it off the eras Clone Wars or Civil War. If ure playing in Civil War then you get to pick between a ship used in the Clone Wars. With the freighters,trooper transport and fire spray patrol boats. Explanation: U choose a venator class Star destroyer u get 120,000 credits for upgrades,attachments&modifications. But if the player chooses a freighter,fire spay patrol boat and standard patrol boats. Then the players out the cost of the upgrades,attachments/modifications. The GM chooses the mods,attachments/upgrades. So u could get a part that’s not suitable for the ship. So it could cause damage: like the hyperdrive shutters and fails to engage. Or something bad happens to the weapons/nav systems.

Wait so this is normal!? Oh thank gods! I had an idea for a dwarf bard of valor, who I want to have his entire dwarf clan be wiped out one way or another, preferably by a big baddy. At this point he’d multiclass into barbarian (and eventually ancestral guardian).

RPG is simply about creating your character in fiction world who will play in some role with his destiny and own profession, development of skills,powers, items and etc...Many people think that RPG is just dialogues, nope it calls adventure genre. Best example for RPG games is Dungeon games like might and magic, Dungeon keeper or similar games like Icewind Dale, Divinity series or Action RPG Diablo, Sacred, Titan quest etc....

If you have some time I'd like an experienced DM to hear out a concept I am working through in a game. I feel I am over stretching by feeding the DM the 'steps' I am taking within his world to slowly reach my characters personal goal without outright revealing my intentions (purely story).

Personally I find this idea of destiny to be bit counterproductive when it comes to playing an RPG. It makes a lot of sense when it comes to storytelling when you're writing a book for example,but a good player is willing to give up any and all ideas they originally had for their character in order to make whatever actually happens in the game matter. If you go into the game with an ''ending'' in mind you'll either end up being disappointed or you end up making a lot of the things that actually happened in play meaningless,because you refused to let them affect your character.

Hello good sir, I'm aware I'm a bit late to the party, but I only recently found this series. It's very helpful and much appreciated. Regarding the topic of character destiny, at what point do you recommend involving the DM with this? I personally think it's fun to keep him/her in the dark for a while, just to see how far you can advance with your ideas without the DM's help.

This is actually so helpful. A Pathfinder campaign where I made a super spiritual barbarian built around her Halfling clan's ancient mythology. And since she is spiritual but not in a zealous way more in a belief of this massive Wolverine as the source of the forest her clan lives in and the source of Rage I was thinking of this cool arch where she becomes a druid as her closeness to the natural world through her believes manifest into a more intense bond. But I wasn't sure if I should pitch it to the DM. I don't want to derail his narative or pressure him to break from the apparently space story he has.

If it's going to be a long campaign, I usually start with a more nebulous concept of where I think the character will go, but I usually will react to the situation. For example, in our Curse of Strahd campaign, after our characters went to a certain ruined keep my character decided he wanted to rebuild the order of knights that used to reside there, which I mentioned to the DM and he loved it. Heck, lots of examples of this can be seen in Critical Role, like the Briarwood arc for Talesin's character, or the fight with Kevdak for Travis and they'd been playing for a couple of years before their personal destinies came to the fore. Now, how do you feel about these personal stories in big groups? I usually find that once you hit 6 players it's generally really hard to juggle everyone's person destinies and goals, let alone giving everyone their moment in the spotlight.
@GreatGMLive

Big groups are always problematic in this regard. My biggest was five players and even then, most of them discovered their destinies interlocked. It made it easier for me to manage having them chase similar goals. In the end we had three active destinies, one of which actually never resolved.

I regularly handle 6 these days and thats just a bit on the side of too big for me. Four to five is my general happy place. Unless I'm running Fading Suns. Then it's the more the merrier. Maybe because I always played it in big groups in High School.

I think "destiny" is a terrible idea. Any player may state a long-term goal, but to me that is no different from attempting a skill check or attack roll. You may try for any destiny that you want, but as much as I might try to bend the story towards facilitating a player's goals, nothing is certain.
