Great Spotted Woodpecker (poelzami) (Dendrocopos major poelzami) is endemic to the Talysh Mountains. The smallest and most "dark" subspecies.
Iron tree - Persian parrotia (Parrotia persica), Persian ironwood tree - endemic, forms relict forests in Azerbaijan (Talysh mountains) and Iran (Elburs) near the Caspian coast. The species is included in the Red Book of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
The woodpecker's drumming is his mating song. The woodpecker deliberately chooses a tree where the wood resonates, as in musical instruments. As a rule, these are dry-topped or with dry branches trees, towering above the forest canopy.
So he marks his territory and gives a sign to the female. Ironwood, with its unique timber, is ideal for this.
