This movie is a documentary, not your typical "Blair Witch Project" type of movie as the rest of the "Open Diving" movies out there.
What I'm trying to emphasize is, this is no fake.
Jimi Partington is a real person and this was a real encounter with a real shark that nearly cost him his life.
As much as I appreciate that we get to see an incredible - cinematic like shots from multiple angles,
for someone who is an expert on sharks I would expect a little bit more of a precautions to be taken.
I mean, he was literally behind a thin plastic glass circled by a 16 foot / ~5.5m long shark that would look almost comparable to the original "Jaws" shark that was meant to be 25 foot.
To me, their size was almost identical visually.
Also, pretty damn close to the largest recorded great white shark at 20 foot / ~6.5m and 2.5tons.
So, no joke. I would need reinforced 6inch steel walls around me to feel somewhat safe in its presence. But I'm also a pussy, granted.
Jimi on the other hand will multiple times during the documentary stick his hand into a water with great white sharks to bait them, and when they snatch at him immediately pull out his hand (narrowly) and touch them on their nose instead - to show the Jaws of the sharks for the camera.
Supposedly, a playful act on both of their parts, but I have no doubt in my mind it wouldn't end well if he hadn't pull out his hands in time.
Surprisingly, once this encounter happened, Jimi was quite OK, all considered, and went back
into the water to swim with sharks again fairly soon after the incident and he seemed fine. But once back out of the water after that one, he developed PTSD and fights since to able to go into water and "work" with sharks again - his life passion.
I'm sure we all can only wish him well.
Naturally, I'm also glad the shark didn't suffer any injury either. As much as they are scary, they are also magnificent animals. I only swim in waters that cannot, nor ever had any sightings of sharks ever. Works well for me so far. But after watching stuff like this I still have "mini" panic attacks when swimming in ocean letting my imagination getting the best of me.
I would have shat myself immediately should that have been me there instead of Jimi - before the actual attack even happened. To me, probably the second worst possible death next to burning alive - being eaten by a massive shark alive.
The only really surprising thing in this video is, that once the glass was "broken" from underneath Jimi by the shark, his massive balls of steel didn't immediately sink him right to the bottom.
Jimi you proper madlad, not many, if any, can do what you do!
That is a proper achievement if I have ever seen one.
I wish you speedy recovery!
