The GPT06 Volcán Descabezado backpacking trip is a demanding endeavor requiring hiking experience in remote areas and the ability to navigate and traverse harsh and challenging hiking environments. It cannot be approached without proper preparation. Traveled daily distances and elevation gains information are not necessarily good reference indications as they are contingent to weather, snow conditions, river fording conditions, etc. For this reason I purposely omitted them for this backpacking trip as they could be misleading for trip planning. For the same reason I have intentionally omitted the link to my map itinerary.
If you have any interest in hiking the GPT06 Volcán Descabezado route please consult the Greater Patagonian Trail wikiexplora page (www.wikiexplora.com/Greater_P... ) to learn about GPT's long distance route hiking/packrafting and download and carefully read the latest version of the Greater Patagonian Trail Hikers Manual (download link on the same page). Also, carefully review the content of the GPT Section 6 wikiexplora page with the section specific information and the latest hiker reports (www.wikiexplora.com/GPT06_(De...) ).
Hiking Notes:
I have been interested in doing this route for about three years, I had to postpone the trip in 2023. The GPT06 Volcán Descabezado route was an amazing hiking trip which exceeded my expectations.
The area of Volcán Descabezado is indeed a truly unique landscape. Because the volcanic events of the last two centuries have transformed it into a unique natural wonder. Its remote location and challenging environmental conditions only enhance the hiking experience, making it all the more memorable.
Through the entire itinerary the presence of the great Volcanoes can be seen, felt and experienced. I find it very difficult, or impossible, to put into words this experience. I hope the video footage does some justice. It was a truly magnificent hike.
