Congrats Man! I got extremely lucky and bought a 1970 Super bass a year ago, almost identical to this one original owner with original cabinet as well. Two of my 71 pulsonic cone speakers worked great but two were seized up. I had Jim Scumback Speakers replace my cones. Highly recommended, He is the man for your speakers! He is a vintage celestion master wizzard! He has cones in stock that are very similar to the originals and he will custom dope yours to your liking and break them in. You can find lots of info from Jim on the forums as well. Looks like yours has been modded to super lead spec. Which is what I did to mine. I spent a couple of months playing around with the tone stack values before deciding what I liked between superbass and superlead specs. I bought vintage mustards and Iskra resistors, kept all of the originals to easily put back. Mine came with a pre PI master and I kept that and also added the post PI master which I will never remove! It is a must for playing in the house. I can get all kinds of tones using the pre an post masters. I can get fender clean to classic rock to hair metal. A vintage boss super overdrive in front of this thing is icing on the cake. I also put in a selectable bright cap switch on the back. Mine had a polarity switch and death cap which I removed. My power tranny had been replaced with a stock one early in its life. My circuit board components and caps were all original. I am advocate for all original parts I get OCD like you do over this stuff. I have some good advice for you if you want to reach out.

26:58. You are lucky, mate! Congratulations! Most of them that I see are modified to hell or ruined by years of "maintenance" done by some TV repair man. As you can see on the red inspection marks, it was not butchered anywhere else, but for the installation of the MV pot and few caps. Plus, because I can see a single pot, it seems to be a pre phase inverter MV mod that's easy to remove. All you need is one wire between the wiper of tee treble pot and turret board usually. Though I can't see it proper on my phone. Will check it later. Although if you fully open it or bridge it, it is as almost as it was not there. Plus, removing it would mean somehow plugging that hole. It is a later turret board amplifier that you will be able to repair forever. Considering that Marshall is from the UK and this is the USA model, it is an export model. Though UK amplifiers have most awkward power cable connector that breaks off regularly. Your model has just a simple hole and cable strain release. So you can easily change the cable and strain release for 3 wire cables. Or you can do a sacrilegious thing and install IEC socket that many guitar players request from me anyhow. Often made modification that improves usability of these amplifiers. The third switch is USA thing as well. It seems to have rotary impedance selector while older model's, once again, have a awkward plug that you need to plug in appropriate holes. Plug gets broken off often or even lost. BTW people who are Celestion cork sniffers love pre Rola Pulsonic cone speaker's. But considering that Pulsonic factory has burned down late 73 it it is quite possible to have real Pulsonic cones in the Rola period and true all 1973. So far so good. Let me see it further.

The 100k carbon comps instead of the 220k's is likely due to the transformer replacement. The voltages were probably slightly different so they used 100k's to get the bias to sit right without the bias pot being maxed out in either direction. If you can turn the pot and get the bias colder than you need it to be then I would leave them. But I would lift one leg of each of those .022's and check them both for DC. With signal on the input get a couple resistors of the same value (some high value 100k - 1M), tie both of them to ground on one end, the other ends to each of the .022 caps (power tube side). Power on the amp and read in between the cap and the resistor for DC with respect to ground. It should be 0V or damn near close. Read it once, wait 10 minutes, read again. Anything over a few mV I would replace those caps. They are 600V though so they are probably fine but those are the two you don't want to take any chances with or you'll have to bid farewell to the other transformer.

Either due to partial failure, hum, heat issues etc. I still have a huge block of cooked pine resin from inside one of them on my desk. It was such a shock when I wired in a Hammond replacement the first time and I could no longer tell the amp was even powered on due to it being completely silent. Don't care about power transformers? Seriously? They help establish the amps performance and tone and also contribute to the feel of the amp. @@brianwalton6283 I may be wrong, but if two transformers are outputting the exact same voltages across all of its taps, age doesn't really matter. OT I understand is different. One more befire I see the rest of the video. Those Dale can filter caps react great to reforming proces and turn out better than many replacement caps. They can last extremely long time. If they read bad now, great thing is to try to reform them. Also good material for the video. BTW these were used in Hiwatt amos as well, and they last there long time as well. Actually, in 100Watt models, the first two caps are often in serial connection. Two sectons of caps get parallel connections, resulting in 100 uF capacity. Then you do two of 100 uF serial, and you get 50 uF but with the insaine Voltage rating. That being at the first node makes them work on way lower voltage than rated and that's why they last forever. 50 Watt models get just one cap and operate on lower B+. So just two sections in parallel. Still, even those neasure fine if they were working always. Still, even those reform very well.
@YeatzeeGuitar

Reforming is a weird concept to me that I don't really understand. I know it's big in the Marshall world, but basically non existent with other vintage amps like fender / vox. Why is that?
@NINEWALKING
29 күн бұрын
@YeatzeeGuitar every new cap gets formed as well. People do not know that. When standing still for a long time, they need to be formed again. Exposing them to rated voltage directly can damage them. You are clever enough. You will find how it works. Basically, you expose caps to a certain percentage of rated voltage for a certain amount of time. Like 10 percent for 18 hours, for example. Then you increase the voltage and do it again. You keep on doing it until you reach the rated voltage. I think Frayette has a good explanation of how it works in his video. The main thing is not saving money, but having good original caps that can work for decades more. Often, with better values than new caps have nowadays.

If you want to keep it as Super Lead spec make sure the tone stack cap (the red tubular next to the 33k) has been changed as well or if they left it 250pf. The Lemco 560pf is original. Already at 3:45 I have to comment. Look at the times they have had. 100 Watt of Awesomeness and full stack and playing even smaller gigs. Awesome times yhst are long gone. Fast forward to half a year ago. I brought one of my 40 Watt heads and 2x12 , with not the most efficient speakers, mind you. It was a small dance floor about 250 people venue with DJ setup. So they do play loud but different music. But when it came to blues and blues rock, everyone was complaining that guitar was too loud!?? Even their singer was unhappy while he was way louder. It almost got the poor guitar player kicked out from the building by in-house people and part of his own band. That all while people in the crowd were enjoying it. So, where were 4x fewer speakers and way less power, and the amplifier was not even on half and it was a problem? Sure, that particular amplifier midel of mine is wild and kicks out high peak power, and it's dynamic and touch sensitive. But comman, what is this world came to when people are complaining on that loudness level? Every kids rehearsal in rehearsal rent rooms is way louder than that. Bass player came with the tiniest combo I have seen. Like 11" cube with the output to in-house PA. There was a Fender Deluxe Silverback for the other guitar player. Small drum setup. Stage was unpleasantly quiet. Sad set to be honest. Soon as the guitar player would feel the grove he would be stopped by angry looks.

Really, you don't want the pre rola pulsonic cone speakers with this amp ( Necessarily ). The early rola 1970-1973 are the best speakers ever made. ( Keep the pulsonic speakers as well though ) Pulsonic cones were the various engineering stage that plotted overdriven guitar speaker design, and sound in order to acheive the early rola design. Hundreds of variant pulsonics were created for testing and experimentation. The only reason of course the rola cone version of the pulsonic cone that was destroyed in the fire of pulsonic headquarters were truly engineering musicians working closely and design lead of the team itself. The offspring of the pulsonic cones chosen are the early Rola cones, then rola went back to their stubborn preferred ways, and hated the fact that a design by pulsonic was being duplicated by them .

I think it was a simple mistake to say that was 4700PF bright cap it should be 470pF if I am not wrong. Highest value bright cap I saw on any Marshall was 1000 pF. 470 pF was used in some bypass positions as well. Sometimes in the voltage/signal dividers they would bypass top resistor so some of the treble comes true. In mixer resistor they would do it as well in Lead models.

How do you know it's overpriced? What do you think is a greater amp historically than a Marshall JMP? How can you say it's not a lot of quality? Odd comment

@@YeatzeeGuitar I started out playing guitar on a 68 less Paul plugged into the same Marshall amp you’re talking about years of playing on different amps. I would say if I’m going to spend money on an amp I’d probably go with the Friedman or the Paul Smith or if I really wanna play a lot of heavy metal I’d probably plug into a random Marshalls are overrated. But that’s just my opinion you know I think everybody get a little too sensitive about when they start talking about namebrand gear some people like it some people don’t

@@Iowaboy745 that's all well and fine, but not relevant to the video. I said the JMP is the greatest amp of all time. Friedman would not exist without the JMP. Most of music we know and love would not exist if not for the JMP. You didn't answer my questions either.

@@YeatzeeGuitar yeah but what you’re forgetting to say is all them jmp we modified from hell to get him to sound some evenly decent that’s why Jake e Lee health design the Friedman app because obviously he was tired of the model the hell out of the Marshall
