I came over to this video based on your reply to a comment I made about Honda VFRs being so iconic, so yes, your replies are appreciated! I am obviously partial to the V4 gear driven cam whine and thus really love the similar way a Honda RC51 V-twin sounds as it has the same whine. I have Moriwaki titanium pipes installed and the deep throat-ed rumble has never failed to make me smile in 24 years of ownership. Thanks for the videos and keep it up!

Totally agree about the Honda 297... and I'm old enough@ 71 to remember Ago on the triples and fours especially at the TT.On the banking at the Creg, he passed me several times so close that there was a percussion type of physical blast and the explosive bark that made me flinch involuntarily ruining my panning and left me with photos consisting of empty tarmac,tarmac with fraction of Ago's helmet, tarmac with end of bellowing pipes...I was 0nly 17 so improved over the years to pin sharp pics of Bob Mckinly,SMBH ducati win, Mcguiness etc but I'll never forget I'll never forget the Triumph Slippery Sam,MVs as their revs peaked and crashed as the back tyre left the ground around the mountain. one tiny criticism is you very informative comme ntary can spoil the sounds we all want to hear..maybe subtitles could help. Excellent research all the same.thanks. One thing that is not covered by anyone is the on bike sound experience, my 2000 Ducati's 916 engine has a great exhaust sound above 6000- 9500 rpm ( no catalysers), but the induction howl/moan going down the box gets me everytime.😅

As they say 'I was there' !. It was a hot week-end. At the end of the official racing the track was opened for approx. 30 mins (I suspect unintentionally) to spectators with bikes to take a blast around. I remember putting in 3 laps with my buddy who was on a Honda 900 Super Sport, before they closed it down. Such fantastic memories. Great video, and of course there is the question of personal taste, but I feel the big V-twins are underrepresented. My Moto Guzzi 850 le Mans with Rex pipes is still one of the greatest sounding bikes ever, if not the greatest of all time. That the BSA 750cc Rocket 3 made 12th place was satisfying, but I would have rated it higher. Mine was a love-hate relationship. Great to ride (once the stupid cow-horn handlebars for the US market were replaced with clubman bars), ate all the bigger Japanese bikes for breakfast on the open road, and sounded great - but leaked oil and the electrics were atrocious until I sorted them.

So many sixes on this list. Kinda makes me sad that manufacturers are being forced to pare down to fewer cylinders for emissions regulations. Cheers and thank you for the wonderful video!
@barebonesmc

Let us be clear, the manufacturers are building twins because they are cheaper, not because they are more efficient with fewer emissions. IMO that is :-)
@Cobblestonerton
4 ай бұрын
@barebonesmc I completely agree that the twins are indeed being produced for cheaper. The expense of meeting emissions standards has forced out many Supersport four cylinder 600s from production. Engines with fewer cylinders typically produce less internal friction, which can be more efficient and more easily pass emissions standards without costly investment. The cheaper option is also the easier one to pass bureaucratic mandates. Maybe low sales figures and an aging demographic combined with a cost of living crisis has also pushed motorcycle design into this direction. I know I am unlikely to see or hear anything "new" that is as exciting as the motorcycles compiled into this video. I have to admit I am jealous of your experience following Honda racing sixes from the sixties around a track. Glorious is a fitting word to describe it.

@@Cobblestonerton it is interesting, i know of no other industry that at the same time as moaning all the time that sales are down, invest nothing in advertising to get new customers. they seem content just to squeeze higher and higher margins out of the existing customers, and show little interest in creating new ones. yes politicians and regulations play a part, but i do think the big players have a lot to answer for to be honest

About the 125-5 ...in an article I read at the time ...Mike Hailwood was testing it ...the mechanics said to him we don't know what it will rev to so take it to 18,000....after the test as he was walking away Mike casually said to them....by the way it revs to 22,000.....

The best sounding bike I ever owned was a 1995 Triumph Adventurer with aftermarket pipes. That big triple torquing out of a corner just would make your hair stand up. An old beater 1st gen Honda VFR700 sounded quite nice too with that big gear driving the camshafts.

So smaller cc bikes have worse throttle response but at pitching cornering speed that's an advantage and a better learning curve. Less chance of over shooting and if there are other riders it's just the hope that they have the corner speed right so you can add a tad more with throttle adjustment that does less ie less chance of losing the back

I was riding to work last week and a bloke came screaming past me on a CBR250RR. I couldn't hear the engine sound for the manic laughing and screaming from the rider. When I caught up to him at the lights, we had a quick chat. Turns out he has a few litre bikes, but said the little 250 was the most exciting machine he has ever ridden. I'd give a left testicle to own a tricked one. Time to start saving.

The Britten was indeed super special, even if Mark Farmer lost his life riding one of them. Agostini's MV 3 was a race winner that held off the 500 two strokes until 1973, no doubt due to Agostini's expert riding. It has a pleasant howl, but is too loud for my taste. 😊

NONE of them have the sheer thunderous raw shout of a Moto Guzzi Le Mans 1000 at full throttle. When 'round the houses racing' was still allowed in Western Australia we would go to the races at Katanning, Wagin, Collie, Albany and Kalgoorlie and I would stand on the corner of the longest straight and wait for the Le Mans to come in under heavy braking blipping the gears and then hauling on that heavy throttle and roaring up the straight. It gave me goosebumps then and now. I swore as a teenager to own one and now I do. The sound, oh that glorious sound!
