Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis warned of difficult days ahead on Tuesday as ministers met to discuss a response to wildfires that have destroyed homes and forced the evacuation of thousands of tourists from the island of Rhodes.
Mitsotakis said conditions for fighting the fires would be difficult in the following days and warned the effects of climate change on Greece would "probably get worse, not better."
"For climate change, there is no magic defence. If there was, obviously we would have implemented it," he added.
Angry residents on Rhodes teamed up with firefighters to tackle a wildfire in the village of Vati on Tuesday.
"All the island's burned. We lost our island. Our beautiful island. We don't have anything now, really, we don't have anything," Stavros Nikitaras, a local fire volunteer, said.
