Funny story, this movie came out not too terribly long before I joined the Marine Corps so, needless to say, I was obsessed with it. I distinctly remember in SOI in one of our NBC classes they brought out atropine. My only knowledge of it was from this movie so I was thinking "omg, they're about to show us how to stab ourselves in the heart!!!". Nope. Not even close. I was pretty relieved when they were like "yeah, just slam it into your thigh".

The Rock has probably the best premise of any movie in the 90s, even with the silly Batman grappling hook. What makes Hummel intriguing as a villain is that he's bad because he's threatening to kill civilians, but he commands respect and he isn't entirely wrong to be angry that the US denies the memory of soldiers (particularly with lingering bitterness about Vietnam before Saving Private Ryan flips public memory), and he ultimately isn't a madman. The uncertainty that he isn't all wrong makes him different from Hans Gruber as the other memorable 90s villain, who has no redeeming motive.
@AsdeEspadas.Fernando

he is a mad man for sure. Sean connery said it "this isn't combat, it's an act of lunacy". he represents the acceptable side of American military insanity (patriotism, viciousness) which is then mixed with the unacceptable sides to highlight them.

As always entertaining content, this is one of my favorite films and easily Nick Cages best work. Ed Harris, Connery and Navy SEAL actor Micheal Biehn make this film amazing. I still have a hard time watching the shower scene when the Marines have the high ground. The conversation between Biehn and Harris is top notch. Heart wrenching part for sure.
@ss67350

This is probably the best cast action movie of all time. Michael Biehn was in Navy SEALs and the Abyss, Sean Connery was 007, turned Nicholas Cage into a huge action star, and all the supporting cast had been in similar roles throughout out movies and TV shows. The helicopter-shower scene used active duty SEALs as well.

Not to be the All-Star in the comments, but on your helicopter story, it very well could've been just popping flares in preparation for the landing phase. I was a Huey Crew chief in the Marine Corps, and tactics we practiced were if you're approaching an LZ of a commonplace, be unpredictable to the enemy. Its easy to target a helicopter in the landing phase if you know that every time a helicopter lands here it takes this approach at this speed, etc. So before entering final, do something unpredictable. Idk the background to your story, if you were landing at a FOB, main base or what, but flares do pop off white when dispensed, as well as chaff. Also, the helicopter in the scene looks to be an AH-1W Cobra, assuming you're talking about the attack chopper and not the transport in the background.

I know for certain that the US Navy uses different lingo than that of the US Army. In one of the scenes it seemed to me like you were trying to identify one of the helicopters they were used during their insertion. The attack helicopters, the escorts, were AH-1 Cobra's. The transport helicopter might have been a CH-46 Sea Knight but it looked more like a CH-47 Chinook. The part of the movie that I found a bit goofy was in the opening moments Gen. Hummel arrives at the weapons storage facility under the guise of an inspection. First, I don't care what the guys rank is, if he doesn't have security clearance for that site, he isn't getting past the gate. I worked for such a location while in the military, and access is tightly controlled with picture ID of everyone with clearance. I don't recall there ever been a surprise inspection either. Second, with the exception of Major Baxter, the team looked like they were hobbled together from a weekend airsoft event.
@OldGoat-cw8he
2 жыл бұрын
Actually it was a Sea Sprite in the first shot. Same Helo they use for Marine 1. Nailed the Cobra escorts, they were old gen Cobras even at that time. They were decommissioning the Sea Sprite at that time. We had 60's and 46's while I was in. That was before and during this time.

Guns in movies, basics: - Always make clicking noises when you point them - If you threaten someone with a gun or sneak up behind them, the gun is automatically a single action gun with hammer down, even if you just shot it, so that you can cock the hammer, making another clicking sound to go with your one-liner. - Shotguns *MUST* be pumped every time the camera cuts to the shotgun or it enters a new room, doesn't matter if the shotgun is semi-auto or Elmer Fudd, always pump that thing. And there is either nothing ejeced or always an empty shell, never a live one and you can kick down 15 doors, pump it every time and still have full tube of ammo.

I always found three things to be unbelievable in this movie knowing that this is supposed to be awesome and not realistic: 1) Connery got out, not back in, his roll would likely be off for the flame scene 2) the general tells two captains that they are performing as well as their reputations...he doesn't know these men? I would only choose ride or die brothers for this. 3) the pit where the seals all get killed...the marines knew that would be the place, no guard, no claymore, no grenades?...what?

But we usually carried at least one line with a hook, per squad, for the Assault Element in CQB. [And you didn't WANT more than one person to be climbing it at a time...lol...you probably Could... but why not get one man up, maybe a second person for security, while the rope, with or without the hook..usually with (you just wrap it around anything that looks like it...Hopefully...will stay put, and run the line through a hook to secure it...) made more secure.] ...but anyway, they were already attached to a static line and "butterflied", then placed just on top of your (or whoever's) ALICE pack. When you get to your ORP, or other predesignated point, you get out your line and get ready to twirl n hurl that bad chicken

I had the same experience as Buck when I arrived in Baghdad. C130 suddenly dropped altitude and did evasive maneuvers. Some 10th Mount dude looking out the window said "flare". (It was a night arrival at the BIAP). The pilot only said the plane was landing fast. "As soon as the ramp drops, run straight to the terminal as fast as you can." We did. But I didn't see any IDF landing on the tarmac, nor heard any gunfire. I was a new guy like Buck and didn't ask if we were shot at during landing. All I cared was I landed safely. The rapid decent, banking etc it’s all to get away from the location of the flare heat signature.

It was a common technique during cardiac arrest [and I'm sure other situations] up to the 1960's, declining through the 1970's; my guess is the writers grew up when it was commonly practiced and weren't aware that it's not used anymore and just thought it would be cool.

The navy has clear glass set up like that. The people who write on them, go to school and learn how to write backwards
