I heard it’s about Tim from 924 Gilman Street. He actually had cancer and Billie hated him for kicking them out. NOFX has a song called “I’m Telling Tim”. I think it’s also about him and came out in ‘97. But yeah, Billie is acting like he’s on coke though.

@@SecordJJ Howard Spoke about it recently. They were still on terrestrial radio at the time. Gary said that they asked the band if they could play a couple of Howard's favorite songs. But they were not demanding it, just requesting. Billy Joe took it the wrong way and they did this song instead. Which was bleep completely on its original broadcast. Needless to say Gary had to deal with a very upset program director, Tom Chiasano, while Howard hid in his office.

I don't know. They could still play their music when they go on stern and be themselves. I guess maybe I'm just specifically referring to Billy Joe. I see him on stern these days and he is like a shell of himself when he is performing. I'm not sure if he is tired, or maybe just thinks it's embarrassing to actually put the same kind of intense, real emotion into their performances as he once did. I'm not saying trey needs to push his drum set down and fall over at the end of a song, or that Billy needs to be as wild and crazy as when he was a teenager. I feel like there is a happy medium but maybe life just beats you down. I really think that might be it. Covid + just the situation of the entire world. Maybe you lose that spark after all these years. Here's to seeing another performance like this but in 2023!

Never been the biggest fan of them, but revisited Nimrod, and recently discovered Insomniac (yes, waaay late), and I gotta say: those are some really good albums. Especially Insomniac- so good. And Platypus, man, this is a hard song; I really enjoy Billy’s yells here. So cathartic.

I think the band also caught some shit because they didn't play the hit song that they were supposed to. I'm not a huge fan of the band so I'm not sure what the big hit was at a time but playing platypus was kind of their way of saying fuck you, we'll play whatever we want. I remember the Stern show talking about it and it turned into a whole big deal in the hallway. Either way, badass performance

This is the most punk thing Green Day ever did if you don’t know they were supposed to play welcome to paradise (I think) because that was one of there most popular songs at the time but instead said Shut up were gunna play what we want and played probably there most punk song (Platypus) and some songs from warning so for all those people who think Green Day are corporate punk well read this comment for a slight change of heart
