They're labelled "sell-outs" because they signed with a major label (which is equally absurd). Green Day wanted to actually make a living playing the music they loved, but because it didn't conform to the DIY aesthetic that the punk scene cherished, they were judged for it. In not conforming or letting peer pressure dictate their success level, Green Day ended up being more punk than the punk scene they came from.

Some folks can’t equate between talent and point of view. If GreenDay covered Rancid’s Bloodclot, they would probably chart with it! Even their songwriting ability at 17/18 on 1039 was exceptional and still punk ( playing gigs in barns with farm animals wondering is pretty punk to me). I don’t see that wanting to get their music to a wider audience is a problem. And let’s be honest, it wasn’t till they were popular that the socialites jumped in and started buying Dookie … it wasn’t the other way around… not a huge fan of the last 2 albums… here’s hoping the next will be back to grass roots!

Here's the tea. When he was younger he had a naturally higher voice, so he used a vocal technique that made his voice sound "deeper" ie more guttural, think of the throat shape you make when you yawn, and had a somewhat nasally snarl to his vocals. He had higher range back then as well so he could "put on" a voice so to say and not really suffer too much range loss, but as his voice dropped with age/ became worn from constant touring and he lost range, he started using this technique less and less and starting taking on a more contemporary pop singing approach (warning/ insomniac era) so he could sing higher notes, this is evidenced by his common usage of fry vocals after this time, though he still had some of his signature Billie Joe technique then. Since American Idiot he took on a very conservative and safe, efficient singing approach (and the best way to describe this is that he's using a technique closer to his natural talking voice). He throws in the occasional old school BJ snarl and odd use of vowels. What he does in this era/ now is a hybrid of the AI vocal style, with dookie/ warning/ nimrod vocal flairs ie the general "personality" of his vocals. If he was still using the "dookie" technique 15 years ago, his voice would sound way too deep and would limit his range too much to sing the songs he's written over a span of 30 + years.

It bothers me when people always bash Green Day nowadays. They saved punk (which almost died) in the early 90s and went on to become the most successful punk band of all time. But because they grew up and decided to take on new ideas in music like rock operas, they are constantly labeled "sell-outs" and they aren't worth a damn anymore. Just go to a Green Day concert. You'll see exactly what I'm talking about. They are a great band (my personal favorite) and nothing will ever change that.

I'm not really a big fan of the palm muting pattern in the original studio version (as played here - 1:26), I much prefer the version Billie did at Reading 2004. There's just something about it being more upbeat and keeping the pace that makes it more enjoyable in my opinion And before people tell me it's basically the same, yes I know but Billie and Jason in this performance play it almost silently as if trying not to do it. To anyone who has no idea as to what I'm saying go watch "Green Day Reading 2004 She"
