I have a place in my heart for Green Day because it reminds me of being a young child in the early 2000s and watching my edgy, brooding (dearly departed) teenage cousin listening to Green Day on on his non-skip portable CD player. I thought he was the coolest and wanted to be just like him. I hear my 15 year old brother singing along to Green Day with his obnoxious teenage guy friends while he plays games online and I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s a young teen rite of passage to listen to Green Day and hate the world

If you're thinking "Why would an American rock band want to put on British accent?", I guess after the '60s Brit. Invasion, you had U.S. pop bands wanting to be the Beatles etc. to the point of imitating the singing voices and sounding a bit British. Same goes for Bowie later. But when it comes to punk, well I mentioned Joey Ramone deliberately trying to sound British like Peter Noone of Herman's Hermits singing "I'm Henry VIII", but I think there's more reason for U.S. bands to sing punk in a British accent than that they're trying to imitate the Pistols or the Clash, I think angry British accents sound a bit harsher than angry U.S. accents, I'm sure a lot of Yanks, besides trying to copy the Pistols and the Clash, just thought that the British accent sounds more punk. I'm from New Zealand and possibly the Australian accent is even more harsh and dare I say "more punk". Midnight Oil is a good example. Then there's the South African accent...even more punk?🤔

All of your critisizm is solid. The reason why I love the music so much is because I'm 19 and I'm at a point in my life where most of their early music is very relatable to my life on a lyrical level. I love how the songs have an aspect to anger to them. When I play Green Day songs on my guitar I feel like I'm getting my anger out through music. But in my head they disbanded after 2004. Everything before nimrod is kinda sounds the same but I love all of those songs and I can listen to them over and over. Nimrod and Warning are great because they are musically more complex and the lyrics take a step up. Then American Idiot is great but I only want to hear those songs in the context of the album, I never just want to listen to Jesus of Suburbia randomly. They just should have moved on after that.

My brother used to work at a Tower Records for roughly a month way back in the late 90’s, and in that short period of time, he got to meet Davey Havok (lead singer of AFI). I asked my brother how it went, and this is what he told me. “I went to shake his hand, and all he gave me was this limp wristed, faggy movement, where he just placed his hand on top of mine…as if he was waiting for me to kiss it or something.” LOL!!! I will say that the album “Black Sails on the Sunset” is one of my favorite punk themed records of all time.

Whatever proto-punk literally means, I took it to mean pre-punk e.g. comparable to later bands like Ramones or Sex Pistol, not punk in the same way, but I guess partly responsible for those and other punk bands. On "Is punk U.S. or British?", well the Ramones' self-titled debut was at the start of '76, quite far ahead of the Sex Pistols' and The Damned's first releases, singles, at the end of '76. I'll also mention The Dictators Go Girl Crazy! one year ahead of the Ramones and I would call that punk, not proto-punk. But the thing about the Ramones is, Joey was clearly putting on a bit of a British accent. I read up on that and he apparently said that he was trying to sing like Peter "Herman" Noone of Herman's Hermits, he may have named "I'm Henry VIII" in particular, which brings me to the influence that some '60s British pop/rock bands had on punk. I always felt "I'm Henry VIII" sounded a bit punk, but also "My Generation", I guess "You Really Got Me" and the Stones in general. I could go on, but I'll just say it's a massive simplification to say "Punk is American, not British!". It's that kind of attitude that makes me a little bit proud of the Beatles for having outsold so many U.S. bands regardless of how little I think of their music.

I agree with your character assessment and their discography in general, but there are songs some of us listened to in our preteens. Shenanigans was one of my earliest introductions to "punk", it's true! No, Green Day aren't pioneers of the genre, and they didn't help me graduate musically. However, I grew up so far removed from western music and wasn't familiar with much before my time. I understand music very differently now, after years of heavy listening. The music I'm into now (and you can check my playlists on here) just wouldn't make sense to compare to Green Day, but I would never go after them!

They are musically consistent , and they never have claimed to be a punk band , they have stayed in there lane for 30 years and it's there job , they have a huge catalog that they make money from and touring is there bread and butter . Even highley rated bands like Queen ( the newly formed Queen with remaining members) operate on the same principles . Green day is trash now , but they know they will always have fans. American idiot was a decent album . But it's very dated music I agree . To give Billy Joe Armstrong his credit tho he was a pretty good songwriter, listen to songs like "she" . Especially since most of his hits were written when he was under 25

Green Day is awesome, but so is hearing someone who in elementary school sat with his friends to see who could sing like "Billie Joe the best." and also felt like if you wanted to kiss a girl, you had to have a Billie Joe impression, shit all over them on a podcast. This is fun.

I was a teen in the 1990s, & I vividly remember the moment I lost intetest in this band. I was in college, Warning came out, I bought it then after a few songs I thought "this is a weak watered down version of Dookie. Meh. Well THAT wont happen again.." then, few years later Nimrod came out, I bought it, after a few songs I said "FUCK, they did it again😑!!!!" Havent bought their albums since then. When I heard Nirmrod I realized they are the McDonalds of punk rock.

I hate this band and its music. To me it's fake punk, hiding a pop band under its mask. They make the worst of The Beatles (and there's a lot of worst there) look good.
