Green flags are the signs or signals that someone you’re interested in has the genuine potential to be a friend. As a person with ADHD, and especially as you get older, if you’re like me, the friendship deck can feel like it's stacked against you. I have made more “bad” friends than I can remember and often because I believed in the potential of a person versus taking time to get to know someone before jumping all-in.
Why do I do that? Well, friendship hasn’t always been easy. And because of that, I often see characteristics or attributes in a person that I hope, or wish, is their real self. Sometimes it is, but often, that hasn’t been the case. As a person with ADHD, my impulsivity can get the best of me too. So when it comes to friends and jumping, well, for me that’s kinda natural.
As an ADHD Coach and writer, what I started to see is how common this is. It’s not unique to me and how ADHD lives in my life. My friends and clients with ADHD experience many of the same challenges. I want to jump in. And, I want to make great friends. When my impulsivity meets with opportunity, I’m vulnerable to making decisions that are not the best for my life.
That’s where green flags come in. As I studied this phenomena, what I really started to pay attention to was the actual signs that someone would make a great friend. By taking a moment to read the room (and by that I mean the signs) I started to see who was actually showing me that they want to be my friend.
That is what a green flag is.
Green flags are the evidence that someone could be a great friend. And in this video I talked about the signs. Some of them are intuitive and you’ll get them the second you hear them. Others, are really hard to pay attention to because if you’re like me, friends have let you down over the years.
If you want to make a great friend, you want to know more about green flags. What they are, when they show up and what is worth paying attention to.
Listen to the video and see which green flags fit for your friendship needs. And please share in the comments if you have other green flag friendship ideas that work for you.
