Excellent video Dante. I agree... I like this series but it couldn’t have gone on for much longer than it did... social relevance gets old fast. People naturally got tired of it and it got canceled. I’m surprised it went as long as it did... as Julie Schwartz said... social relevance is dead

The O.G. "get woke, go broke" comic title. In retrospect, it was groundbreaking, but the reason social relevance books don't last and generally don't make money is because comics are a form of entertainment-- Entertainment is meant by its very nature to be a form of temporary escapism from the problems and drudgery of the real world. By logical deduction, why would you want to "escape" right back into the world problems from which you are seeking temporary respite? "Entertainment" media which no longer provides escape but instead amplifies socio-political issues is no longer entertainment... it's propaganda. Nevertheless, the Adams art is spectacular, and I have to hand it to Denny O'Neil for his excellent writing. Even so, these books are now somewhat anachronistic and the perceived effect of the messaging wears thin with time.

Yes indeed… and that is a great point. The escapism is gone with too much social relevance

It wasn't a "woke" comic because the concept of "woke" was only invented about five years ago, and means something completely different to what these books were about. You're applying a modern concept that is loaded with specific connotations in a way this completely anathema to the time these were created. These were definitely socially conscious, but so were lots of other comics at the time - you can't tell me for example that Black Panther wasn't as equally socially conscious, it just had a different way of going about it and GL/GA was just more overt than others. But the 70s and 80s had heaps of comics with similar themes, and frankly, comics got way better when they stopped just being about superheroes punching super villains, and vice versa.

Funny enough I was able to grab this issue thanks to your recommendation Dante! It was not only the earliest example of being " Woke" , it established that cosmic heroes only need to look in their backyard to see someone needs helps...not halfway across the galaxy!

I did read this run back in the '80's, when I bought the reprint series DC brought out (on lovely Baxter paper), with original covers by Adams. Adams could really draw beautifully back then, now he's just gone nuts. Did anyone read his Batman Odyssey mini? Psychotic! The only real downside to the GL/GA series was that it's dated badly. O'Neil's scripting leaves me pretty cold at the best of times, but in the context of when it was originally printed, it was very relevant, timely, and well worth the time Neal Adams spent illustrating it. The better stories were the not so in-your-face social issues ones (like the little kids gettin' stabby wit' it! Yow!), but above all, worth a read, or investing in the originals if you've got the moolah.

@@Dante19883 Right, I also think one of Adams' strengths (and Kevin Maguire's, too) is his mastery of facial expressions, especially when Lantern and Arrow get pissed off at each other...which is quite a lot!

Yep. First Bronze Age book. GL 76. Saved GL but go so extreme that it ended at 89 and it took DC 2 years to figure out what to do with issue 90.

In regards of the subject matter in this comic (which I first learned from the amazing DC Comics Documentary from 2012) I think this excessive back and forth bickering about contraversial topics has always been coming and going in waves. It's nothing more than a fad and it will pass. In fact many of comics and Star Wars fans are slowly waking up from this bizzare "woke" war on the artists' capacity to express themselves freely. I always say, if you don't like a book, put it down. No one is forcing your hand to read it. Entertainment isn't a life necessity. There are far more pressing matters to be concerned about.

Hot take: The GL/GA run was considered groundbreaking at the time because most comic fans in the 70’s were younger people who where more open to “woke” topics. Today most people reading comics are older and part of the community that ignore social issues like the adults in the 70’s. That’s why today “woke” topics in comics annoy us.
