First inspection station for green lumber after being received from sawmill supplier:
1) The packs are set in front of the chain and taken toward the Lumber Inspector.
2) Farther down the grading chain, the Lumber Inspector looks at both sides of each board and tallies on a handheld computer. He stops the chain when necessary to look at any particular board.
3) After grading, boards pass on to the end of the chain, where workers pack them for air-drying.
4) Spacers are added evenly between each layer of lumber to allow air to flow over all the lumber. Sticks are kept aligned with the layers below to ensure that the lumber does not warp.
5) Finished packs are rolled out of the station to be moved to a different part of the lumber yard for air-drying.
