I've been preparing to insulate the ceiling of my garage for months. Today I did it. I expected to use cellulose because it was cheaper and was the type of insulation with which I was most familiar. The price of the cellulose versus the fiberglass was about the same (30 bags x $15 vs 10 bags x $45). The factor which made me opt for fiberglass was the mess. All reviews of cellulose cited how much dust it created whereas fiberglass generated only a tenth as much. The fiberglass air stream had a reach of about six to eight feet. Because some of the areas I wanted to insulate were very tight and difficult to reach, I slipped the hose of the blower into a length of PVC pipe and I was able to reach all areas easily. I calculated to blow in a 12 inch layer of insulation but the actual depth was closer to 16 inches. I have zero experience with cellulose insulation but my experience with fiberglass was positive and am pleased I chose it.

@@RPetruccione Nope. I just ran the hose through a 10-ft length of PVC slightly larger than the hose. It gave me an extra 10 feet of reach. The distance the insulation blew from the end of the pipe was more than adequate to reach the remotest corners of my project.

Okay... (deep breath..) The Atticat fiberglass insulation is $31 per bag for an R-19 value at 109 sq. ft. The Greenfiber insulation is $11.25 for the same R-19 value at only 40 sq. ft. HOWEVER...... although this comes out to a wash, with the only apparent difference being more bags to buy with the Greenfiber, fiberglass has approx. 2.1 - 2.7 R per inch while Cellulose has an R-value of 3.5- 3.7 per inch. What THAT means is that fiberglass LOSES R-value across temperature differences when compared to cellulose. So, to achieve the same overall and consistent R-value as cellulose, you actually need to increase the number of fiberglass insulation bags, and you'll end up spending far more money on proper insulation as compared to using cellulose. In other words, it's not comparing apples to apples.

Green fiber insulates more for the same space requiring 4.29 inches to reach r13 while fiberglass requires 4.75. The cost of green fiber is ruffly 1/3rd the cost of the fiberglass while being safer to install and better at reducing sound . Cellulose is fire, mold, and insect resistant , while fiber glass is often used by insects or rodents to nesting material . They're many reasons why when you go to the store the insulation machines for the green-fiber are gone , it's because everyone wants them not the pink stuff.

But after you blow it in yourself, your gonna have that smell in your nose no matter what mask you use.. but the cost, i paid total 350$ for 50 bags delivered.. i got the deal with the store and was alse able to get a hell of a rebate from the gas company and one with the electric company both.. was like half the price so yea.. shitty thing about both is you can pack the attic plum full with the stuff then come back a year or 2 later and itll compact itself down about 1/2 its height... it only holds r value when in fluff mode... yep..

Not sure how you're coming to the conclusion that fiberglass will give you a better R-value when fiberglass gives you R-3/inch while cellulose gives you R-3.7/inch according to manufacturers, meaning a 23% greater R-value. According to the Dept of energy, loose fiberglass is closer to 2.5/inch while loose cellulose is 3.5/inch, with better air sealing. The main issue with cellulose in my opinion is that the borate it is treated with can become corrosive to metals when wet, but I hardly consider that a reason to discount cellulose as an option.
