If you lay cardboard on an area, for a few days, where you want to get rid of the grass and other plants, the cardboard will kill them by depriving them of sunlight. Leave it there, until the plants are yellow, and you will be able to remove them easier. Another helpful thing to do, is to thoroughly water and area, and let it dry until the ground is moist. This makes it easier to remove the plant and roots, if you pull it out slowly.

@@DIYDanie to add to this - put down cardboard, wet it, then follow up with a thick layer of compost and finally mulch. Then you can either wait until the cardboard gas decomposed or you can actually cut holes in the cardboard and plant. That's what I did. Also, and I'm not sure where you are exactly, can arrange for a free drop of mulch from Chip Drop. Last, landscape fabric doesn't prevent weeds from growing. Yes, maybe the ones in the soil already but weed seeds will drop on top of the fabric and the roots will grow through the fabric. Then it will be near impossible to pull it out without ripping the fabric. Eventually you'll have a ripped up mess AND weeds. Mulching is best or just planting so much that weeds literally have no room to grow.

Just some personal advise from someone who has been gardening 30+ years. Spend your money on perennials, bulbs and flowering shrubs. Permanent plants. Plant annuals in pots and some in borders for a pop of color. They are truly a lot of money for a short time.

Danie, Please, PLEASE! Do not sprinkle the water on the plants. You are wetting the leaves and not the roots. If you wet the leaves and leave them in the sun, there is a chance to "sunburn" them. By putting the water on the base of each stem you are aiming on the roots. Much more control and less waste. Saves water bill, too.

Landscape fabric ruins your garden. Sure it keeps the weeds out of the soil but they grow on top of the fabric & keeps nutrients out of the soil. In a few years if you look under a spot of it the soil will be a weird light grey color. A thick layer of mulch will keep weeds down and it feeds the soil that feeds your plants.

Hi Danie. May I give you a little advice about climbers (honeysuckle, clematis etc). They'll thrive much more if you separate them from the little stakes that were in the pots when you bought them - remove the stakes, untangle the stems & spread them out & separate the stems as much as you can, as climbers need air around them when they grow. Leaving them all bunched up isn't great for them . Hey, it's all a learning curve 😊. You've done your beloved Vincenzo proud lovely xx

The Lilac you planted is too close to the fence. It is one that could easily get really, really big. If it has heart shaped leaves, it is a big variety. You will now have to prune it every year. It would have been better to plant where you would never have to touch it again. It will be beautiful! The one good thing about gardening. You can always fix things. I love the end result. And the brick idea is so lovely. LOVE! LOVE!

Growing up, my parents did a lot of vegetable gardening (mostly to cut food costs). They also grew and sold strawberries. My dad kept a log book that listed what seeds and plants they bought, when he planted seeds, when he started transplants inside, when he moved them outside, how much he planted, their yield, how much we were able to store or freeze for the winter, how long it lasted us, and weather info. He also tracked how much rain we got and the water level in our well. We call it his Almanac and it has about 3 decades worth of detailed info that is incredibly helpful. I don't know how much detail you plan to keep in your book, but I can tell you the information can be very useful in hindsight. Side note - it was always bittersweet at the end of the summer to have nights our parents let us stay up late sniping beans as they were blanching and freezing them 😊

Danie, beautiful garden and an even more beautiful reflection of love. I have one bit of info I'd like to share. I have planted Morning Glories in the past. Although I love them, there are cons to having them in a flower bed. In many parts, they are considered noxious weeds. They are prolific growers and take over a garden, choking out other flowers. They are highly competitive plants and take years to eradicate. Maybe along the fence may be a "better" location, but in the sweet garden bed next to the greenhouse may be a regrettable decision. If you still want them there, I'd put them in pots at the base of the GH, that way they are less likely to spread through the bed itself.

@@Britbabe53 I had planted them in my back yard. I have almost an acre. I planted them behind the grass area along a wall made of railroad ties. If there were a DIY class, I'd be in it (i'm sure those exist, but like..... you put it into practice in your daily life)!
