Reading below, it's always shocking to me how people don't know Greg Howe. He's been around since the original late 80's Shrapnel era guitar virtuoso's. Truly one of the all-time greatest IMO, Introspection album is a masterpiece

my guitar teacher when I was a kid would always talk about how great greg howe was and that he was underrated. I get it. There's more flavor in his playing than alot of the big name guitar soloists you think of

I think Ive watched this about 20 times now ! I think its one of the best guitar vids on youtube. So tasteful and melodic, yet technically frightening! It also takes a true genius to jam for 4 minutes and not repeat a lick. Incredible.

Years ago I grew out of this whole, "so and so is THE BEST GUITARIST" thing. There are so many crazy guitarists out there. Having said that Greg is one of my top 3 favorite of all times. The guy is just flat out sick.

the first time i heard Greg improvise, it felt so refreshing but somehow familiar like if i already heard 'the song' when i was a kid. now i realize that he just plays what i wanted to hear the most all my life... 5 years later i still come back to this video as a huge source of inspiration and feeling.

Greg is really exceptional..... and this track is so melodic and groovy that it makes the whole thing very accessible. I'm so glad I could see him play in Paris after 20 years and more of listening to him. I just wish a live video or a live album would have been released....

Greg: I actually knew and worked with Bobby Hebb and I will tell you that you play Sunny to perfection. I know that Bobby would have been pleased with what you did as I am. You see Bobby and I worked for The Massachusetts Highway Department In Boston and he was always cool and I mean it. I don't understand how this video got any thumbs down at all! there are obviously over 100 viewers out of almost 2 million that are complete downer, know-it-all, douschebags that think they have a "real" sense of music and understanding of master improvisational work. I would like to see just one song in the world played by a solo guitarist that easily pleases everybody... This one is pretty darn close!

So enjoyable to watch Greg Howe blaze through such a tasty ballad with a hybrid style incorporating fusion runs and shred. Need I say more. A teacher of mine,Rob Sbar who is a brilliant player studied under Greg. I watch this video atleast every other week!

Yer sir! With John Scofeid (guitar), Joey Defranceso (Hammond and Bass - yes, at the same time, like Ray Manzerek on steroids:)) and Byron Landham (drums). Awesome version. But I also love Greg's approach. You know, there is an awesome guitar virtuoso by the name of Guthrie Govan who, I believe, and please correct me if I'm wrong, was inspired by Greg's technique. Check him out. Nonetheless, I love this version and thanks to the person that posted this.... a belated thanks at that:)

He is using modal scales (different modes of Ionian scale).

Yes, you can always kind of point what scale he is using per chord. But I suggest to try thinking and playing in smaller chunks of information (ie: intervals, triads, quatriads), instead of scales. For example during a G7, you might play something based on G major triad plus a b9: if you go the scale route you will see this might come from many scales: altered, diminished, phrygian dominant, etc. Interesting, but confusing and not practical for playing in real time! There are no really shortcuts for fussion and jazz, but thinking in smaller units instead of 7-8 note scales (usually spanned for two and a half octaves) is much more easy to grasp, especially if you just started learning fussion/jazz.

He's actually one of guthrie's influences, not sure if he's better than guthrie though...you definitely hear a lot of howe's style of shred in guthrie's lines...but guthrie is a machine, he was manufactured in a HYDRA lab

greg is more interesting and creative in his playing, his phrasing is a milestone. govan has some serious chops though, but is clearly influecend from howe in his lead playing. greg had his style 25 years before guthries first release. hutchings can fuck off, no contest.
