Fantastic! Love seeing an F5000 car driven hard by someone that knows how to! The sound is freaking glorious.

Great stuff. Love the F5000. Great to see one piloted by a gun driver of today too. Closest you'll get to what it would have been like to have been on board with one of the greats in the day such as Kevin Bartlett, Frank Matich, etc, etc. Having said that there are still some guys punting them around pretty quick at the pointy end these days too. When these things died in the day I was only 11 years old but I felt robbed when the 4cyl based class replaced it. Nothing like them, never will be.

Would love to have seen punt the GM1 around Puke. I know he broke McRae's record there of 55.2, I think Greg did 53.6 in a Formula Holden in 1996

I timed the video on the stopwatch and it seemed as if he was running within a second of the track record! Great video!! You cannot beat the sound of a 5 liter V8 in a feather light Formula type car!!

Is this the same type of Formula 5000 car with the huge, high air intake? First came across Formula 5000 on some testing days in the UK. Glad I was not on the track at that time... I definitely find myself more interested in "retro" types of racing now. It has been a privilege to see so many interesting race cars in the last few years. We will be going to certain events in the future specifically for that reason.

Nice. Thanks for the upload. Still, couldn't help noticing this car appears to have some major positive camber on the front. Optical illusion maybe?

Sweet. Dudes got a KTM sticker on his helmet. Motorcycle racers kick ass even on 4 wheels. That thing is a brute.

A good driver knows how to handle a tail-heavy car, a motor like this sorts the men from the boys -- loads of torque and a barking, growling big engine

Yes, his muted comment just before that one was " f*&% me " He posted a good time in this first drive. Many of these have significantly more power and a better setup than they had back in the day. They sport Brodex and various alloy heads for a start which they never had back then. They didn't even have alloy heads and mostly used the old 292 chev series castings. While I was rebuilding mine KB and Repco etc assured me most were shy of 500BHP back then. Many would have 550 now I'm sure.

That Kart is tiny - no wonder F1 drivers start on karts - F1 must seem so robust in comparison!!!
