In this clip Caleb Nichols experiences a “genre switch” mid chase scene. This posed a challenge - how do I convey this musically while still capturing the action?
Although the show depicts Caleb’s connection with Eastern Europe, I took the liberty of deciding that either he or an ancestor had also spent time in Japan! This opened up various Eastern influences, and I settled on a combination of taiko drums and shakuhachi flutes. I’ve been in love with taiko ever since I saw #KODO perform live, and knew I’d have fun working with those instruments. Plus, the taiko's high energy pairs well with the demands of the scene.
I still start with a “conventional” action sound, but by :50 we’re squarely in taiko territory. Once the “genre switch” has been established, I start mixing in orchestral and electronic elements as needed.
