His greatest in stature, were the P2 and W1 steam locomotives also Gresley’s greatest gambles?
Watch these @HornbyModelRailways OO Gauge Giants synced with archive sounds to give them a full head of steam at full regulator.
The P2, 2001 “ Cock O’ The North ” has recently been weathered for a customer and with its 2-8-2 “ Mikado “ wheel arrangement is possibly the biggest 00 gauge locomotive to pass through the studio so far.
This video provides a glimpse of the future as brand new build P2 no. 2007 “ Prince of Wales “ is well underway at Darlington by the @thea1steamlocomotivetrust889
I can’t wait to see and hear this magnificent loco in action, it’s due to steam in 2025.
The P2 makes a pleasing comparison with the W1 10000 “Hush Hush” which has also received weathering and been pressed into service alongside the home fleet. Whilst in the Neville Grove weathering studio the opportunity was taken for the loco to pay a quick visit to the wheel drop where modifications were made to the two trailing axles beneath the cab. This simple modification allows the wheels to sit on the rails and rotate when running and thus has rectified the only fault I could find with this sublime offering from Hornby. Big thanks to Jack of @SouthernRailwayModelling for the tips on how to do this. He is a master craftsman of building kits and modifying RTR models. Do check out his KZitem channel to see his work.
Archive sound recorded by Peter Handford is featured courtesy of Old Thundridge Records.
Thanks also to @MrTBrearley for the use of his superb recordings of 60007 working on the Settle & Carlisle Railway recently.
