Interesting. I'm studying the transition from silent movies to talkies. I wanted to hear it for myself. Her voice is almost appropriate for how she slowly strolls in, dragging her feet in weariness. It carries a weight, a burden of trial and journey. Yet, it's shocking to hear that resilience in her tone. I wonder if I'm experiencing the same as a viewer did in that time period.

The old woman reaching for the drink but holding back not once but twice, eager but trying to politely wait for the Garbo to pick up her drink is heart breaking and adorable. They definitely do not make them like they used to.

Has anyone ever done an intense electronic analysis to compare Garbo’s voice pattern in this scene with the one in the German version? I’ve never been convinced the German actress was really Garbo. I’m only referring to this particular scene.

I've always liked this film because of the Great Garbo...but never noticed how static and stagey some scenes were even for an Early Talkie. If you have viewed other Clarence Brown movies, he was a rather pedestrian director, as was Robert Z. Leonard. The William Daniels' camera stays too long at the empty table after Marthy / Dressler gets up and it takes even more wasted time for her cross a few steps to the next table. Hugh Wynn's editing is just plain bad and could have been tightened up ! Not sure that the sound "restoration" adds much. I love looking at these films to see how talking picture technology was creeping and finding its way. By 1932, I think they ironed out all the kinks for fluid continuity. Yet, this is one of the early Talkie films that launched my love affair with Garbo and Classic Hollywood when I first saw it on late-night in 1978 !!!

This is actually amazing. I love what you do. I do have a request, but since it's technically not a restoration, it's perfectly fine to say no to this. But can you remaster "I'll Wait" by Ween? There's only a low quality version of the song and I'm curious on how you can make it more listenable. much love!
