Those 2 cat eye holes are questionably large. I wonder how long the top will stay flat with that much material cut away. I love Gretsch but I will wait to see how this one ages

You are right! This guitar is so ugly that I hadn't recognized just how large the holes are. I love cat eye holes, but this guitar is a joke.

Rob is a cool dude, and he has created some splendid looking guitars in the past. However, I am not feeling this guitar at all. Gretsch guitars are generally known for being some of the best looking guitars on the market. But, this guitar looks plain and drab to my eyes. I hate reliced instruments in general. I think this guitar would have looked fantastic with a polished black top and some type of inlays or position markers on the neck. The only way I would take this guitar home is if it were given to me for free. I can´t imagine a jazz guitarist wanting to play this instrument. Maybe a punk rocker, but not a sophisticated jazz musician.

Cool, but my 5420T looks ten times better than this custom shop gazillion dollar piece !

I was thinking the same thing. How can a guy who created an absolutely stunning reverse Billy - Bo make something as horrible looking as this thing?

@@Walks-With-Pride Easy to answer. He has free reign to do what is "Creative Innovative gear" and Fender has tons of money to justify the Gretsch Custom Shop ugly guitar. I don't see many of these being sold.

The best Gretsch Custom Shop guitars are made by Masterbuilders Stephen Stern and Gonzalo. Those guys are genuine artists and have an eye for beauty. My question to Rob is why waste time with sterling silver bindings and trim, when the rest of the instrument is butt-ugly? Why waste more time relicing this monstrosity? It only made it worse. I hate reliced guitars! It's like buying a fake Rolex. If someone wants a beat up guitar they should simply buy a used instrument to begin with. I personally prefer new guitars, or pre-owned ones that have been well maintained over the years. Musicians who abuse their instruments don't really love them. Anyone who doesn't cherish their instrument and treat it with care is not a real musician in my opinion.

Respectfully I disagree. A “real” musician (whatever the fuck that is ) should endeavour to get all of the tone out of their instrument with effort and fortitude. This will ultimately render it somewhat beat-up in the end. Failing to do this means they didn’t really feel their music.
