They do that to catch water in their fur then they lick the water off. It’s how they drink

This is actually how they get a drink. Most of their fluid intake is from the fruit and nectar they eat, but sometimes they want a drink. They can't stand up because their pelvis is rotated 180 degrees so they can hang upside down. They struggle to fly up off the ground, needing some height to dip down as their flapping takes them aloft. Also, there are a lot of predators on the ground, so it is the most dangerous place for them. I bet it feels wonderful to take a cool dip and drink the water off your fur as you groom in the shade. :)

i see a batty is getting cool. the cooling process is done by taking a brief dunk in the water when they are over heating and hope a gator don't catch the min the act. sometimes fanning is not enough in the hot temps of the day.
