The weirdly familiar sounds of Grey junglefowl - Gallus sonneratii
Junglefowl are the ancestors of domesticated chickens, and they look (and sound) the part. The Grey species is endemic to India and can be found in forests, thickets, bushes and scrub areas. On my recent trip there I could hear several males calling from my room, early in the morning and at dusk.
While they can be fairly loud, India is an extremely noisy place so my plans to record them were not very successful. My only chance was to try and use a small drop rig that I left out for 48 hours until they got comfortable enough around it. Fortunately this worked and I managed to capture these close-up calls that minimise distant noise from the village just enough.
