My heart broke during Zola's speech because it was the first time that something that was abstract to her as a child became a reality for her. Her horror when she realized that Mer and Maggie were in danger of developing this cruel, horrible disease at sometime during their late 40s-50s and that she could lose them both made me feel as if she were one of my nieces and I cried from the beginning all the way through Meredith leaving her seat to comfort Zola and protect her as they left the stage.

I doubt it was the first time it became a reality. Just the first time she let other people see how scared she was. Knowing her she probably didn't want to make her mom feel bad. She's so responsible, she was always saying things like 'let's not tell Bailey and Ellis, it will scare them too much', which now makes me think she was actually very scared but convinced she had to be the strong one to protect the rest of her family.

Because Ellen is only doing some of this season they need a reason to write Meredith out of some episodes. I have no issue with them deciding to send Mer back to Minnesota to continue the research which might help cure Alzheimer's. Not because Mer wants the glory, or the awards, or the massive salary. But because she wants to save her children from losing another parent.
@ethanthomas2066

@@ethanthomas2066 thanks. I hate it when they drop storylines so I like to think of ways it could tie together. I also want to see how Amelia, Winston and Nick react to the prospect of Mer and Maggie getting Alzheimer's. Amelia has so many issues with loss and the idea of losing her two 'sisters' would be almost as hard as it was for Zola to consider. Winston saw his mother die slowly of cancer and there are clearly a lot of unresolved feelings there. Nick became a transplant surgeons because he wants to save lives, but this is something he can't fix. I'd like to explore what that means to him. I know it's been done before with Derek and Richard talking about what it meant, but then it was Derek thinking he could save Meredith. I like the idea that Meredith could decide to save herself. And it would give Amelia a reason to spend time with Kai as she tries to save her family.

This girl has already been through so much loss. Of her birth family and culture of origin, of her father who she remembers but her siblings don't, with her mother in a coma and other medical emergencies and that Alzheimer's gene that might not affect her (or she might have it too since we don't know about her birth family) but definitely her remaining family members and guardians. That's a lot of weight to put on someone, especially her age. Add to that her mother and single remaining parent having a very straining job and still working through her own childhood trauma of exactly that and that she apparently it's gifted in a way that might be extremely isolating as well and she has her challenges cut out for her. I almost expect Grey's Anatomy getting another spin off Legacies style seeing her grow up and mature with her history into her own strong person. Edit: Also obviously her own medical issues which she had to get surgery for multiple times already and losing DeLuca who had also taken up a parental role to her.
