Actually, American units of measurements are all defined in terms of metric units, because those ones are already defined in terms of universal constants. Honestly, the only reason we don't use metric units is because we already have an intuitive understanding of how big feet, pounds, and miles are.
@grianthehermit
14 күн бұрын
what he said
@Ryvaken
14 күн бұрын
Also it's a superior system which has units that are actually of useful sizes, instead of a slavish devotion to the number ten? Conversions that are multiples of 12 mean fractional units likely have integer representations. Conversions that are powers of 2 are easy to approximate without tools. Universal constants sounds nice, but I was paying attention when they redefined a kilogram into something you need advanced degrees in physics to understand and specialized, expensive lab equipment to measure. The other definitions are no better. This is not a practical endeavor so much as it is a pseudoscientific nerd fest. Much like the creation of the metric system in the first place, but at least they aren't faking the work and using bad math anymore. The only thing metric has going for it is that the conversions are supposed to be easy, but when working in metric my international students go for the calculators faster than the American ones. I am a math teacher. I've done enough engineering classes that it behooved me to become conversant in the history of where units come from. It is my professional opinion based on research, history, and experience, that metric is DUMB.
