There is something very weird at seeing people probe at a word that I use completely nonchalantly, like a dog watching humans staring at a zoo's wolves.

this. I used the word "quaint" in a conversation with aussies who stared at me and asked me why i used strange words. i thought for a moment i accidentally used a word from a different language while speaking but, no... they were stumped by an english word... an english word that i use like a normal mundane whatever word..... Scupper didn't ever twig my radar coz it's ... plain ? ... simple? like it doesn't even strike me as that weird or out there... (but then again i did read the dictionary back in grade 7 to make sure the arrogant teacher who tried to insult the class could never use his favourite "nobody here has read the entire dictionary!" line ever again... so i might know a few extra words lol)

Is the verb 'scupper' not used in other English-speaking countries? What do you use instead? It's a fairly common word here in the UK.
