Found this series after finding Johnny's TEDx talk through the search bar's autocomplete. It's a shame that there's only the 6 episodes but this series was done so well. I myself work in the mental health field and I may end up recommending some of these videos to patients in the future. I think what really makes them shine is how open and genuine Johnny is about his own experiences, and how well he is able to tailor what parts of them he includes to add to the message of the video.

Ni no Kuni is a game that basically all about a child's grief and his retreat into a fantasy world to cope with it. Oliver's experiences and interactions in both his home and the other world help him get over his grief.

***** Not really. Ni no Kuni (the other world) wasn't something that Oliver had before his mother's death. He enters it to try and bring her back after Drippy the fairy comes from a soft toy he was given. Also it's important to note that this other world actually exists in the game's narrative.

Wow, fascinating episode! Some games have created such a powerful sense of grief, when i was a a kid final fantasy 7 hit me with my 1st taste of grief when aeris died! That was the 1st time a game made me cry, as an adult only a few games have nearly made me cry or shed a few man tears and that is mgs3 after being forced to kill the boss and snakes tear at her graveside. Persona 3 was just emotionally draining with one of the hardest hitting final boss fights and ending. Crisis core too...

I took the concept of grief as a galvanizer too literally and did a great deal of harm to myself in the process. I wish I'd known in my youth that it was a trope and not a life map, so I could have slowed down to cope rather than rushing straight into attempted heroism. Here's to more honest portrayals of grief in our culture going forward.

Really enjoyed this series, thank you for making it! The part about finding basic tasks much harder and triggers reminded me of a game called The Cat Lady, a point-and-click about a suicidally depressed middle-aged woman navigating through her ongoing grief. When I played it about 8 years ago, I was feeling similarly to the protagonist. There was a section early on where you can make a cup of coffee and some dinner, and it is purposefully split into many options and small tasks to make it feel like more of an effort. If she notices anything slightly off (milk out of date and the like), her stress shoots up. It was only 1 little scene but it made me finally recognise what I was really feeling. It's not a perfect game by any stretch but it really nails certain aspects of mood disorders.

As a person who's very involved with mental illness and caring for a few close people to me who have to do battle with it I really enjoyed and appreciated this series. I'd love to see more and I think now that a year has passed its a good time to reboot it =) thank you kindly for your efforts!

When my dad died, I said to my friends on a MMO I played that I would probably not be around for a while. I was back within 2 days, because I needed them and I found myself trying to help as many people as I could. My usual drive in an MMO is self gain, so that's not something I typically would log in to do.

I know this is an ooold video and Johnny is over at DB now but I just wanted to offer my sincerest thanks for this series. I'm a long time follower so how this series escaped me... well, escapes me. I'm currently dealing with a huge bereavement myself, stumbled across it and this episode in particular (and the series overall) has fleshed out some of the thoughts and feelings I've been struggling with. This series was invaluable and you're an asset to The Gamer Network. Thanks again

A close friend of mine died this past Memorial Day weekend in an accident. I took it pretty hard. I was all out of sorts for a few weeks. Thatgamecompany's Journey helped me cope with his loss. In fact, Journey is my go-to sadgame whenever I feel down.

The last of us is easily the most emotionally draining game ive ever played! I felt joels grief when Sarah died and i carried it with him the entire game as he was constantly reminded of his loss and then the crazy highs of happiness as joel grew close to ellie and they bonded, ugh, the game is a rollercoaster of highs and lows and by the end i was an emotional wreck! Its also one of only a few games that makes me sad when i know its coming to the because i dont ever want it to end!

I never considered Brothers' control system in that way. Very interesting point Johnny! As far as I'm concerned this is the best series on Eurogamer; you don't see many channels covering stuff like this in-depth.

I am very late with watching this series, but honestly, it's been great binging this. Thank you so much for making this Johnny. Also, not sure if the game was out already when you made this video, but Gris is a great game about loss and grief as well. It stuck around so long in my head because of its beauty and symbolic meaning. Then my grandmother died and I went to replay it, that helped me a lot.

The ending of Life is Strange made me really think about grief. (Spoilers obviously!) Max gets to choose to save the life of her best friend but at the massive consequence of destroying her hometown. Or Max has to let Chloe die to save everyone else. Its more dramatic than most grieving processes but it does make you ask the question of how far you would go to bring someone back. Combine that with LiS as a game being all about being able to spend some more time with someone after they've gone and well... yeah that game really hit me hard.

I had to skip the Shadow of Mordor one cause I just downloaded that and haven't played it yet. But for Brothers and for To the Moon, they hit home well. They were both really sad. The only problem with To the Moon that made it more sad... was that it was still completely fake. His memories were not reality, his reality was still his rough life.

I wish that this series gets rebooted. I played Brothers quite a while back - although I wasn't in the best of places mentally at the time. I remember it being a very moving experience (esp the ending). I somehow managed to miss most of the lighter moments with the younger brother, being too focused on the quest. The only optional one I did was play that harp.

I would argue that grief is to mental health much the same as mild depression or anxiety, and is the mental health equivalent of a cold. Most people will experience anxiety, mild depression, and grief in their lifetimes, but to a great number of people they aren't diseases, just acute occurrences that they experience and then recover from.

Lovely video from the beginning to (especially) the end. I also feel like Thief 4 (if you happened to play it) is a great game about grief, as the protagonist is faced with the reality that he was heavily at fault for the death of his apprentice. But rather than drowning in grief, he just keeps doing his job, although the pain still lingers in the back of his mind. The entire game, the fact that one of his only acquaintances he ever trusted was dead can not be forgotten or pushed aside. No, it much rather haunts the main character. As a gamer with depression, I'm very grateful for this series and can't wait to see more. Keep it up.

You've sold me. Going to pick up Brothers on PSN right now. I deeply appreciate games that leave lasting and meaningful impressions, and your discussion of both it and its themes resonated with me quite profoundly. Should I also pick up The Unfinished Swan while I'm there? The theme you mentioned about it in the video is something I have had to go through myself.

I remember when my dog passed away around the same time I got Halo 3: ODST. I know it's not the same as losing a relative, but after about 10 years living with him, it was hard to believe he was no longer there. I seem to remember playing Halo 3: ODST more than other games and I also remember reflecting on my dogs death as I played through the campaign.

Having just read a BBC article on gaming addiction I would just like to say, Hello Games Producer Johnny Chiodini. On a serious note, I just went back and watched low batteries for the first time and it was really good. My wife suffers from long term and sometimes debilitating depression and whilst she is not a gamer, she exhibits some of the behaviour you talk about. Thank you for helping me support her and understand her better and showing that games are not an evil medium. #fuckdepression

Wonderful video and a great series too. Brothers absolutely broke my heart playing it but it also gives such a sense of possibility for moving on with life after the death of a loved one; that feeling of having to (and being able to) forge on despite feeling like a part of you has died too.

It is a shame this channel focus so much on meaningless and repetitive content like gameplay and streaming and so less on really good and powerful videos like this one and its series. It only makes us sad that KZitem works in a way that values more quantity over quality.
