I've known the story for years but hearing it from JR himself, especially near the end, nearly brought tears to my eyes. I can really feel how much he cares about his good friend, Dr Death. I lost my brother a couple of years ago and it's still surreal for me, not fully sunk in. Cancer is f*cking evil.

Also no mention when JR was managing Dr. Death he did a work shoot promo slamming that mask and had his own announcing table in front of Michael Cole taking his job back. I liked when he was trying to interact with Jerry Lawler and ignoring Michael Cole. Bob Holly took a sick, over the top bump from Bart Gunn missing most of the table and JR had to pretend that it was ruined. Lastly, Tiger Ali Singh had that million dollar man gimmick going on paying "fans" to do stuff, and that was the first time we saw Ed Ferrera do a JR impression (not Bell's Palsy though) and then JR and Williams came out to break it up ending with Ferrera getting suplexed RIGHT ON HIS HEAD.

It’s funny how jr craps on any talent that claims there was sabotage to their career and JR tows the company line, but whenever it’s about jr personally, jr points out how they tried to push jr out of the announcer job and did things just to humiliate jr. It’s absolutely true they did horrible things to jr, it’s just funny how it’s such a double standard. If any other talent complains about the same thing jr gets pissed and claims it was really something else (home life, substance abuse, etc)

Mentioning Dr Death's tuna diet takes me back...certainly the diet of competitive wrestlers. Curious, since JR is such a big football fan, why doesn't more football programs encourage their players to join the wrestling team? It'll certainly help on the gridiron. Would a stand-up style such as beach wrestling be more attractive to footballers?

I interviewed Dan Severn once and asked him about the few times he wrestled Steve Williams BEFORE they were famous as amateurs and he said that the guy was a total character even then. As prodigious an athlete as Severn would become as the first and only triple crown UFC champion, Williams was pretty special and it makes you think had he been around today he'd of probably went the MMA route rather than pro wrestling. Unfortunately, when he tried MMA it was when he was well passed his prime some years after the Brawl For All. It's a shame that he's mostly remembered for that, when he was a longtime territorial champion. I highly recommend his book "Dr Death Becomes Dr Life" talking about his career and conversion to Christianity. Jesus Christ Almighty God bless you all 😊

The only reason JRs podcast doesn't have hundreds of thousands of views is because Conrad started all of his other podcast first and wrestling fans were already used to listening to them in their free time before Grilling JR started.

Even in the short time they turned him heel in Mid South---I remember how Jim Ross and Doc's adopted father, Bill Watts, were very careful not to trash him or denounce their boy, Steve Williams, on TV---they would just say things like--"I wished he wouldn't do that" or "he's just going through a phase" or the old Gordon Solie stand-by--"he just has a change of philosophy right now"!

It's like Bruce says about Heyman and Punk. Vince got sick of hearing about him so he did nothing with him. I believe the same is true of Pat Patterson and Ziggler. JR was such a mark for Dr Death that Vince probably lost all interest. Doesn't help that Williams couldn't talk in an era when talking was so important to the presentation.

JR I don't want to be the man carrying all the bad news , but bottom line is Bart knew how to throw punches , and Steve flat did not know how to. He was all arm punches with very little power behind it Not only did Bart Gunn know how to throw punches , but was also blessed with raw power. Bart beats a healthy , hurt doesn't matter Steve Williams 9 out of 10 times if not everytime. And that's no knock on Dr. Death. Give Gunn the respect he deserves. He was just doing what he had to do , and he did it clean with sportsmanship.

The funny thing is I'm perhaps Dr. Death's biggest fan in the IWC, but I was never mad at Bart Gunn for what happened. In fact, after the Brawl For All when Bart Gunn debuted in AJPW (All Japan) in November 1998 (before Butterbean), I started becoming a fan of Bart Gunn. JR should have really studied that, instead of being all bitter about what happened 25 years ago. It's just strange how I can be as big of a fan of Dr. Death as JR is, but not be bitter & know injury accidents happen. Then again, JR is all "gaga" about Doc's Mid-South run, when I'm much more of a fan of Doc's AJPW stuff, which I felt was his real prime. I knew Bart Gunn was going to do good, because AJPW TV kept mentioning him as "the guy who KO'ed Steve Williams", and the other Japanese wrestlers (who've fought Doc for years) were scared of Bart. He had a really good summer of 1999. With that, I was amazed at how quickly Bart learned in Japan, and he was definitely capable of doing the same style of wrestling that Doc did (King's Road style). In the early 2000s, I followed the Doc vs. Bart saga in Japan like crazy. My favorite memory was when Bart even pinned Toshiaki Kawada in his prime once, cleanly on TV. It was in October 2000 IICR. When Kawada was in his prime, Doc could never beat him in a televised match & it was a running theme, so it made perfect sense for Bart to defeat Kawada. And then in 2001/2002, the Doc vs. Bart stuff became more "sports-entertainment" with promos & an on-screen tag team, where Doc did a "Russo swerve" on Bart before they became friends again months later. 😂

You people are low info when it comes to combat sports. He was a fuckin AMATEUR WRESTLING CHAMPION (and collegiate) who was thrown into a ring with 18oz boxing gloves on an allowed to do simple takedowns. In real life he would have taken Gunn and choked him out (or did a double wrist lock etc...) or just laid on him and beat the shit out of him.

@@lemankurtz8950 he's right, dr death couldn't box, at all. His kickboxing fight illustrates that point as well. However, you are also right, absolute beast of a grappler who would no doubt have ragdolled everybody in that tournament save dan severn.

@@jtaco4101 Dr. Death couldn't box, but his brawling was above average; he even looked to be outpointing Gunn on the feet at first. Unfortunately only knockdowns scored and he was up against the hardest hitter in the competition. Once he injured his leg he had no chance, especially since he didn't seem to be able to soak up punishment like Severn. He didn't even try to stand with Ignashov, which is understandable as Alexei was a world class kickboxer (who, like Bart, had several inches on him) and Steve was a wrestler who could throw down passably in a pinch. I would have liked to see Marc Mero against Bart Gunn, especially if they kept the fight standing.
