The area around Grindavik, in the Reykjanes Peninsula of SW Iceland, is currently experiencing over 120cm of uplift, due to a 15km-long magmatic dyke intruding below, this currently less than 800m from the surface!
The resulting upheaval is causing thousands of earthquakes every day, resulting in the authorities ordering the evacuation of Grindavik on November 10th 2023, in case of a new, potentially explosive, volcanic eruption happening.
Photographs taken in the past few days show the new physical features that have formed in the last few days - this video helps the viewer understand how some of them have formed, doing so in a simple, clear and colourful way.
