Not only is Jinkx Monsoon (the Maestro) from RuPaul's Drag Race, she's the first (and so far the only) two-time winner of the show. In fact, the second time she won it was in a season of all winners so she's essentially "the Queen of Queens." Apropos of nothing else, her performance as Judy Garland in her second season is considered to be arguably THE best acting/comedy performance in the history of the show and it was completely improvised.

The Beatles themselves were actually in Doctor Who, in a 1965 episode, The Chase. It was a reused recording from Top of the Pops though. The original plan was better - the Doctor and his companions would see The Beatles, but it'd be them as older men, played by the young Beatles in old-age makeup. The Fab Four wanted to do it, but Brian Epstein vetoed it, which is a massive shame.

Did you notice when the Doctor and Ruby crossed the zebra crossing the first time, in the background was a Volkswagen Beatle that was also featured on the cover album of the last recorded Beatles album, Abbey Road in 1969! The very first Doctor Who story, transmitted on 23rd November 1963 (the following day after JFK’s assassination), was An Unearthy Child (the child being Susan, the Doctor’s granddaughter). both of whom had fled Gallifrey (which hadn’t been given a name yet in 1960’s Who), and materialised on earth in London, 1963. Susan attended a school where two schoolteachers, Ian Chesterton and Barbara Wright, were teaching her. Amazed at her knowledge and intellect, they went looking for this Susan Foreman at her home, and stumbled into a junkyard (the address of her ‘home’) where they met the Doctor, discovered the TARDIS, and were whisked off into Time and Space. The old lady with the glasses, who was killed by Maestro, is former Doctor Who costume designer June Hudson, who worked on many classic Who episodes in the 1980’s. Think it’s a bit of a stretch that London (and maybe the world) would be devastated if there wasn’t any music in the world, especially as RTD didn’t really explain how it would happen. The Beatles were severely underused (and they should have got actors who looked more like the Beatles), and RTD missed a trick at the end, when the Doctor said, “There’s always a twist in the end,” as they should have gone straight into the Beatles version of “Twist and Shout,” which as a non Beatles penned number, wouldn’t have cost as much as paying out for an actual Beatle song. Instead they came up with a set of crappy lyrics and a stupid dance number which really wasn’t needed.

The Doctor's granddaughter Susan was indeed one of the Doctor's original companions when the show first started back in 1963. I will say this was a better episode than the previous episode I thought the new villain Maestro was an interesting baddie the only bit that ruined the episode for me was the singing and dancing at the end that bit took me out of it and did not feel like Dr. Who. The scene where The Doctor takes Ruby to an alternate world of 2024 to show her if Maestro was not defeated is a scene that's kind of been done before in a Fourth Doctor (Tom Baker) story "Pyramids of Mars" (which is considered one of the most popular Dr. Who serials of fandom) when The Fourth Doctor took Sarah Jane Smith in an alternate 1980 if Sutekh the Destroyer was not stopped. The reason RTD came back a second time was because the Jodie Whittaker era had such low ratings that the BBC were worried about their show, and they were hopeful that bringing RTD back he could catch lightning in a bottle a second time and revive the show. Unfortunately, the 3 episodes for the 60th anniversary (as well as Ncuti’s first episode, The Church on Ruby Road) didn’t have great ratings in the U.K. so either RTD has lost his touch, or viewers are just not into Doctor Who anymore. There are only 8 episodes in this season (compared to 13 in most previous seasons), and this might be because we’ve already had the 3 60th anniversary episodes and the Christmas episode, so add them to the 8 in this season, gives us a total of 12 episodes - so almost a full run. Unfortunately, with only 8 episodes in a season, it doesn’t really allow a number of stories to be too whimsical (especially if they don’t work), whereas with 13 episodes you have enough there to take a few risks whilst still keeping to the core of whatever season arc RTD comes up with!

This is somewhat true but the fact is viewing figures have changed especially with streaming. It true Jodie had bad figures and her era isn’t as loved or liked as others. It also worth noting that the next season has basically finished recording.
@sp0ngeb00b7
4 ай бұрын
The way viewing figures are counted and the way people consume television has completely changed with the ever growing nature of streaming services, and the change of weekly releases to binge formatting leaving Who behind until recently. Viewing figures for the 60th specials were only beat out by special events/weekly shows if I recall, they were the highest viewed shows otherwise that’s for sure. And yes, ratings will be lower than usual… because the internet is rife with review bombing assholes! Things are never as bad in the eyes of the fanbase as they actually seem to be online, it’s a very loud and obnoxious and gross minority that seems to think the NuNuWho regime is the devil’s spawn, “fake woke”, replacement theory show. Church on Ruby Road was everywhere on reaction KZitem, everyone took to Ncuti immediately as far as I saw, and I’m pretty sure had better viewing figures than the other 60th episodes… The figures themselves will not be as high as they were in 2008, because no one’s will be unless it’s something to do with the monarch or the Strictly finals lol, but the fandom is more alive online than I’ve seen in years right now. 13’s era was a shame, but it seems we’re back in full swing, you just must be mistaken.

BBC isn’t government owed but pubic owed as we have to pay for it through a tv license fee once a year, so it’s independent and therefore can hold government/other parties to account through its news and documentaries… Doctor who is owed fully by bbc and bad wolf productions, Disney have paid towards its making so they could show it on Disney+ throughout the world, helping it reach an even bigger audience and help the show be even better with a vastly increased budget… so a win, win I would say… Ncuti is a wonderful doctor and will be a classic Doctor in the future 100%, Millie is wonderful too as Ruby and I can’t wait for the rest of the series/season… ✌🏽

Yeah there was far more pushback about Billie Piper's casting than Freema Agyeman's. (And even more so for the next companion you're about to meet in Season 4...!) I think Martha not being as popular as Rose is more because she was written so pathetically in terms of her obsession with the doctor... I wish she'd been able to stand on her own two feet away from that storyline a bit more (like she did in the last couple of episodes of Season 3 and Human Nature).

Jinkx was so fkin fun!! Aside from Jodie being a woman and Ncuti being black/queer, a large majority of the fanbase really loves the broody old man Doctor, which recent Doctor Who stories just haven’t been writing for. But Ncuti is an example of a goofier Doctor being done well, imo. And hey- When shit hits the fan, I can ASSURE you, this man has the chops to back it up!! If y’all get a spot in your schedule anytime soon, Sex Education is 100% worth your time and Ncuti is equally as endearing (if not, more) in that show. Not sure if coming of age is really your thing but there’s some really bloody cool people involved in that one too, including Gillian Anderson, Emma Mackey, Asa Butterfield, Simone Ashley, Mikael Persbrandt…

I was excited for Jodi as the doctor and only watched broad church to check her out as an actress though I expected her role to be a lot bigger in that. However I was extremely disappointed with her performance in doctor who. now i try to keep in mind she wasnt writing the stories nor directing the show so i dont know how much of the stuff i disliked was her being told to act specific ways but a lot of it definitely is down to too many bad stories. they were trying to do too many things but also had shorter seasons so they couldnt really do anything they wanted to in any good way but also event he one off political episodes were just done so poorly, theres so many other shows that do such a better job at social commentary and something about chris chibnals run was just poorly handled. even the stories i liked at the start got ruined by them just not knowing what they were doing. most doctors it only takes me 2-3 episodes to start really feeling them as the character. I think theres only 3 or 4 scenes where i buy jodi as the doctor and i always think "why didnt we get more of that?!" obviously i cant go into details cause of spoilers but you will see there are some guest characters that knock it out of the park in like 10 minutes while jodi takes 2 whole seasons to start to feel comfortable in the role.

I was disappointed in these first two episodes of the new season. The Christmas Special had the perfect tone to introduce new era of the show. The singing made sense as a form of ritual. The silliness was kept to a minimum. Space Babies and Devil’s Chord were too much to bear. We went way into Disney Chanel movie territory.

The fearful thing is due to these pantheons of Gods. The Toymaker was very dangerous and when he heard the Giggle, he got scared. Last episode, I do not think it was fear or terrified but it was due to the monster being created in a certain way. He even says to Ruby that he is not scared usually, he has seen a lot. With Maestro, it is completely different.

The music was meh except for the Ruby tune. Yellow submarine did the idea better with 60’s psychedelia. Jimmi Hendrix could have shown up , maybe as a time lord or Ossyrian. Definitely Mark Ronson and Sean Lennon could have contributed yo the soundtrack. At least the daptones.

Rose was supposed to be a Ruby. But she became a mary jane with that S2E1 transference with that ghost simping to be third wheeling to just have a body too. Ruby is the equal to Ncuti Gatwa as much as the "Sexy *wink*" - David bounces with Billie's popstar status. Its a cool era of Who. New villains and new type of relationships of the Tardis' voyagers.

They killed this new doctor on arrival with two of the worst written episodes ever. I feel sorry for the actors, especially for Ncuti. Maybe they should have hired a black sci-fi writer to handle the new Black Doctor Who, I doubt a black writer would have written 2 trash episodes for a new doctor who to debut in. It is like writers said he have black Doctor Who, let’s try every crazy idea we thought were out there and they won’t criticise it or we will call them racists. The first two episodes were unwatchable.

There's a billboard on the roof of the EMI building for "Chris Waites and the Carrollers". This is a really deep cut. In the first episode, Susan is listening to a fictional band on the radio, John Smith and the Common Men. Her with-it teacher, Ian Chesterton, says they used to be called Chris Waites and the Carrollers.

Jinkx Monsoon as Maestro is a marvellous new Dr Who villain. She is good friends with Russell T. and he wrote the part especially for her. Jinkx said she was inspired by the fantastic character Missy (from Peter Capaldi's era so you will have to wait awhile to see her and it's a treat so no spoilers). The sixties musical episode with The Beatles was terrific PS (Cilla Black was a famous singer, and television star)👌🎶

38:30 Billie Piper had been in drama school since she was a kid, and wanted to be an actor first and foremost. She just happened to be talent-spotted and offered a pop contract when she was 15, so she was basically one of those "manufactured" pop singers. Once her singing career ended she returned to acting... and what a fine actress she is. I saw her in a stage play a few years back, and her stunning performance won her an Olivier Award.

Yup! Susan, his granddaughter, was the first companion of the First Doctor! Also, keep in mind that particular tone of laugh that Maestro gave when crawling out of the piano, the one The Doctor called "The Giggle". It's a reference to something from the 60th Anniversary ep, BUT if we're hearing it here I suspect we'll probably hear it again, so be on the lookout(cause I know I will be). It's connected to the Toymaker that The Doctor mentioned. Can't say much more than that b/c Spoilers ;)

Well, all the artforms are externalizations of inner emotional need. A catharsis. The artforms that we have are accepted and long encultured languages which are patterns and pattern recognition is much upon which we as human beings rely upon for the basic functioning of our existence. From what we see, Maestro is all for pattern degradation, in a way, much like Davros' reality bomb. Of course, when artists have stepped out of the accepted forms, we have anything from mild controversy to outright hostility and anger - as happened with the impressionists back in the late 1800s who faced harsh opposition from the conventional art community in France and as with Jazz with it's improvision over traditional structure which was seen as barbaric and immoral. They were initially seen as destructive, but they are a distinctly neurodivergently distinct form of language which had to be leant in order to be appreciated. New Doctor, new companion, new patterns.

I do have issue with the term "haters" it's a generic name calling for people that may not like a certain style of the show.... some people didn't like tennant or capaldi but they were never labelled with a generic name... just because the bbc joined certain current western world bandwagons it seems like people can't not like the product without attacks...... there probably are a few people that didn't like jodie (or this current show) because they are trolls but not me nor any person I know... (my son attends a very diverse school and they all stopped watching it too)....
