STORYLINE:
Russia alleges that dozens of Ukrainian militants crossed into one of its border towns in its Belgorod region, striking targets and forcing an evacuation, before over 70 of the attackers were killed or pushed back by what the authorities termed a counterterrorism operation.
But one of the groups claiming responsibility for the strike, the Russian Volunteer Corps, denied Wednesday it had lost any men.
The conflicting versions of events reflect the role of disinformation and propaganda in the 15-month war.
Ukraine denied any involvement in the skirmishes Monday and Tuesday, instead blaming two Russian groups that claim to be volunteers fighting alongside Kyiv's forces in an uprising against the government of President Vladimir Putin.
Ukraine said Russian citizens belonging to murky groups called the Russian Volunteer Corps and the Freedom of Russia Legion were behind the assault.
Speaking to the media at an event the Sumy region, Denis Nikitin, Russian Volunteer Corps commander, said: "We're fighting for freedom, we're fighting against injustice."
Nikitin also said: "We had around 42 square kilometres (approx. 16 square miles) under our control for quite a while (in Russia)."
