I got my hops last Spring and grew them in buckets. They did as good as I expected for the first year. Over winter, I brought them in when it got to below zero over night. Now, they are growing already and there are a lot of new chutes. I can't wait to see how they grow this year. Any suggestions on fertilizer, since they're in buckets. I have the Chinook. My nephew got his Cascades last year and planted them in the ground. They didn't do very well. Both variety were ordered together and planted roughly at the same time. The outside ground is still thawing out, so I don't expect to see his sprout for a couple weeks yet.

That's awesome to hear. We forgot to mention in the video that you can totally grow hops in containers as many of us at NB have over the years. And they do seem to send up new bines first since they thaw/warm sooner than the earth. Good call! To fertilize, we suggest mixing the soil with manure with our slow-release organic fertilizer. Or use such fertilizers as cottonseed meal, bone meal or rock phosphate. Return the fertilized soil to the hole. Here's one we carry: www.northernbrewer.com/products/hop-rhizome-fertilizer-slow-release-formula

Sounds cool. But.. Is it true, that hops are poisonous for dogs to ingest?

It is true. In my personal experience, the two dogs I've had during my time homebrewing didn't want anything to do with them anyway. But if you have a dog that will eat just about anything for any reason, it might be wise to grow them away from the dog's romping room, maybe fence off a bit of yard. Same goes for whole cone hops as for pellets. If you drop pellets during brew day try to get them cleaned up ASAP just in case. @@NorthernBrewerTV This would also make for a special topic Episode, about home brewing safety! Small kids and pets? Both like to eat stuff that hits the floor.
