Oh Ben, you would not believe the quantity of kale I grow every year. I have a giant tortoise, & Kale is a massive part of his diet. Last year I counted 145 Kale plants‼️🙈 which was ridiculous even for me 😂 I gave about 50 away & planted the rest, which has kept us going right up to today! Unfortunately due to one of the many storms we’ve had here in Scotland, a big spruce tree fell over & landed smack into my huge brassica cage 😩 and today we finally got around to removing it. Needless to say, the cage is caput, but miraculously the Kale underneath survived 😂 Love your videos & your articles in Kitchen garden mag......keep them coming 😁

Thank you so much for this info! My lacinato kale that was started and planted out very early spring has held up to some hard hits! Took the bug netting off for a bit (big mistake). Now it’s too tall for any hoops that I have. It is getting full sun now that the garlic is gone. I’m thinking it would come down to preference, but I’m wondering if I should keep it growing through August and on, or start more plants for fall and into winter. Do you think the amount of harvest would be better one way over the other? 🤷🏼♀️ When space is an issue I drive myself a little nutty contemplating.
@GrowVeg
2 жыл бұрын
You could start some more kale now, as an insurance policy. I've just done that, with a view to planting them next month. As for your existing kale, they may get damaged by caterpillars if you can't cover them. You may like to see how you get on - if they don't get eaten alive they should then carry on into winter, with a good frost killing off any remaining pests. But I would sow more now, just to be on the safe side.

Just wondering if you have ever tried Cavalo Nero or other kales at close spacing to get an early leafy harvest, or any other variety. I'm trying four or five to a square foot of rich compost. I am hoping I can just snip off young leaves like with micro greens or will this not work? The only kale I have tried before that seems to like this treatment is Russian Red where you can harvest the large leaves on the outside and keep it growing. But will my experiment with the Cavalo nero be a failure?
@GrowVeg
6 ай бұрын
I've grown Cavalo Nero in pots of compost, maybe two or three plants to a foot-wide (30cm) pot. This worked really well, so your attempt may also work. I would be tempted to maybe do no more than three per square foot though.

Hey Ben, I grow red Russian kale year round here on Southern Vancouver Island (Zone 9b), although through the coldest months the kale doesn't grow very much. This year, I would like to put some in containers in my greenhouse, which even on a wintry day will reach 16-22°C and does not freeze at night. I have seedlings started indoors already… So my question to you is: I plan to put one kale plant per container, because I know they don't like to be crowded. The containers are only 2-3L each because I need to fit all the kale in my greenhouse. Do you feel that would be a sufficient sized container or should I cut back on the number of plants and plant in 8L pots? Thanks! ~ Sandra
@GrowVeg
11 ай бұрын
2-3L is a reasonable size for Red Russian kale. But these will need watering more often and will be more 'needy'. I would possibly grow fewer (but much bigger) plants in 8L pots.

Hello Ben. Loved the video but my question is about size of your beds please. I am about to start fresh in France and space is no issue. So I can go as big as I want. However I note note your beds are fairly small. What is the reason please?
@GrowVeg
2 жыл бұрын
The reason my beds are small is because I'm using pallet collars, which are a standard size (100x120cm). I like them because they are instant, cheap and so easy to set up. But I would certainly recommend going a bit bigger if you are making your beds from scratch. I would say up to 2m long would be fine - and about 1.2m wide. You want to be able to reach the middle of the bed without stepping on the soil ideally.

I will be planting kale this year so a timely viewing! As well as in a veg bed l want to use it as a folige plant ariund a garden seating area with Fatsias, palms and bamboos - hopefully throw the pigeons off the scent.

The only way I can eat kale is in soup, but it's delicious there! I blanche and freeze it, then throw it in my winter soups. I suspect the freezing makes it tender, and the blanching removes the "green" taste that I'm so adverse to. I tried growing kale last year but the caterpillars got it. Maybe I'll try the purple kale this year.

I Just recently covered my new garden with cardboard and straw, I'm having compost delivered, since the grass underneath hasn't had time to breakdown, should I just put my 12in raised beds on top of the straw, or pull back the straw and put the compost on the cardboard?
@GrowVeg

Yes, you can just pop the beds straight on top of the straw and then fill with cardboard. The straw will get weighed down by the compost and will rot down with time. Of course, if you want to save some of that straw, then you can of course clear it away to use later on. Either way is fine.
