Hey Mau5, ??Up for another hack video?? I have a Viparspectra 900 and a Viparspectra 600. One has a VEG/BLOOM switch and the other(600) has three switches. Red, white,blue. I would love to donate them to the channel and see what you can do with them. They are cheapy "blurple" lights on amazon. Similar to a marshydro. Let me know✌🏼

Loving all of these build videos! Thanks so much for taking the time to make these and share your experience! I am really looking forward to the cxb3590 build. I have a request for a video, if you feel up for it... For folks that are just getting into LED lights, I was wondering if you could explain what one should be looking for in a brand-name LED panel, and maybe compare your DIY lights to some of the top LED brands out there. If you were to buy an LED, what brand would it be? why? Why is it better to build one, rather than just buy one? I think it would be interesting to compare parts and prices and talk about why these DIY panels can be more efficient and cost-effective than just buying a brand name. Just an idea and feel free to ignore it lol. Thanks!

I am loving your vids. I have 2 cheap sunspect ebay 600w panels. 277 actual at the wall. I opened them today and took a look at their drivers. They drivers are only 700-750ma output 140v max. If I did Ohms right that means on a 36v chip I am only firing these 100 watt chips @ 25.2 watts right? My question is would two 72v chips be a better option since they would be operating at 50.4w ? I assume driving 4 of them @ 25.2 will greatly decrease their "power" for photon/light production.I am trying to figure out how many cobs I can run per driver. Keep the vids coming. You swayed me to the darkside lol. I would like to play with these cheap panels as a learning experience before going all out on a from scratch build. Especially after watching your light hack video with the Mars 2. Thanks again !!!

+Dritman Awesome sauce !! Answers my question from an efficiency stand point. My only other question is...just because the 36v run efficiently will they be up to snuff with power to grow plants? They will turn on, but will they give me the power per diode I need at that low of a running watt ?; Thanks for the response btw. It's much appreciated. I am up in arms over which way to go. 2 vs 4. The same overall would be achieved per panel but would I have the intensity I need to get down and into the canopy with 4 chips? In a perfect world I would be working chip down..not driver up. But in true DIYers fashion I am working ass backwards lol
@growingforbroke1072

+Dritman Thanks again and i think you are right. This has been nagging my brain for the better part of 48hrs lol Since this is the "staging" point of the build I wanted to get it right. 4 of these on one of these panels is probably the best bet. I will put them in the farthest points in the corners of the panel to really maximize coverage. The benefits of making a light that will fit an unconventional space is really appealing with these. I think you may have boosted my courage enough to start converting a panel haha. We have a similar thought process I have a feeling. Thanks for bouncing these questions back and forth with me. Worst case scenario, I run 4 chips and they aren't bright enough I just pick up a diff driver down the road. I still have 4 chips, which is were I want to put my initial money anyways. Thanks again m8 !!

Do you have any data to support your claim of the cobs being better than the true 5w diodes the mars had or you just pullin a tweeker move? I know if your pulling 25% less power but you have 20% more par your loosing not gaining. But math can lie sometimes right?

Many of the latest COBs have excellent lm/W and high CRI. You can find 80-90 CRI Bridglux and/or CREE COBs on Ebay. Or - you get them from online electrical houses like Digikey and Mouser as the price is about the same and probably more trustworthy. Also, there are now 4-chip (quad) high-power LEDs that put out more light per watt than the COBs. For example, Philips Luxeon M series are pure photon cannons and if you can find them in high CRI, buy them! I use them on my Reef Tank and fully eliminated my MH bulbs along with my old chiller. You should see 200 lm/W LED packages commercially available in high quantities and low prices in 2018. I'm guessing aluminum and copper prices are going to stay high so retrofitting old fixtures seems like a no-brainer.

Hi sir!! You been an inpiration, thanks! I am another one with a mars II (900W) that did just worked well the first harvest, but now emits like 50% of what it was brand new... So,plants grow well, but not flower properly.. Will you make me 5 cents at how to do this tests to find out max. voltage and max amp please? I did open the box and contain 7 unlabel black drivers. My setup is a little 80cmx70cm and was thinking to go for your 8 cob setup, but need to know what drivers I have before. They will be mainly for flowering autos,so, should I JUST use 3500k or few 3500k few 4000K Or 3500k cob's + some red leds and infrared diodes? what do you think? will it make any difference? Thanks for the good job, and for sharing it to us!! Love ya!! Peace!

I would like to see you convert a $15 fluorescent 4' shop light into an active cooling 4 or 5 cob led grow light. This wouldn't be all that hard, and you wouldn't need reflectors for the cobs. Heatsinks would be inexpensive CPU coolers like the ARCTIC Alpine 64s. If you wanted to get slick, you could even add a fan controller (like the Kobwa 4 Channel controller, Amazon, less than $10) The end result would look pretty professional, with no exposed wiring. I mean, if you can get the housing for less than the cost of the reflectors, why not?

Hey man (+growmau5), been watching your videos - incredible stuff. You've definitely convinced me to make my own DIY Led grow light. I was looking to use: (5) - Cree cxb3590 3500k CD bin (36v) to (1) - meanwell HLG-185h-c700a driver. I can't find the efficiency table for the 3500k but in the 3000k is 32.72v @ 0.7A The driver states if operating output is 143V ~ 286V and the cobs would take up 163.6V so I thought I could just go ahead and purchase. But I noticed you said that you used some red Leds to soak up the forward voltage. Basically I just want to know if you added the red Leds because you could or because you had to and also to double check with you to make sure that what I'm planning to buy is suitable? Keep up the good work. Thanks.

Great video!curious would it work running 72v cxb3590 or 3070? would that make it 1 72v instead of two 36v per mars2 driver? not sure if im right on all this but would that make it 50ish watts per cob? Just want to work out if it's possible. thought use less chips save abit of coin and still be great hack if works. plan was 1 72v cob per driver in mars 900 ( still need to open it up see how many drivers im assuming 6 or 7 eg double wot mars400 has, currently draws 400ish watts from wall inc fans) and thats all on the assumption the drivers are all the same in each mars2 just more drivers in the bigger units im hoping. ALso wondering if heat will be an issue as unit is not that big in surface area and running more watts per cbx but does have active cooling x4 fans so yea just trying to get my head round it as have no experience with cobs.. If you could let me know what you think that would be much appreciated:) been watching your vids etc for awhile and really wana make the leap to diy just trying to get head round everything.

Great videos man, learning a lot. I have a question about using the 700w Mars II that has 6 drivers. It doesn't seem like it'd be efficient to pack 12 cob leds into this little 15x15" box so how many would you recommend? Could I take three of the drivers out and make it the same as the 400watt one that you did? Would that mess up the power supply or change anything in that regard? Or would you pack as many cobs into it as possible and have it crazy bright? From everything I've been reading it seems like people usually spread them out much more than this. Thanks for your time and for all these bad ass videos.

did you ever do any PAR testing on the final product? i have a Mars II 700w that i'd like to do this conversion on. it works great, but i'd like to know just how much better the Par output is on this specific hack.
@thefloop2813
4 жыл бұрын
Par doesnt actually go up close to enough to be worth 150 bucks upgrading from the the cinese blurple shit to the full spectrum cree cobs thanks to the perpetual use of dirt cheap photostrobic drivers in these low end units. Maily what raises is luminous flux/total lumen output, Umols per watt does go up, but not by as much as youd think, most these cheap chinese units have 50-60 hz output photostrobic drivers in them, thats why you see black bars in digital pictures under them. And comparing these drivers to constant current drivers is even more extreme then magnetic HID ballasts to digital ones. Even if your eyes cant tell the difference, plants DEFINITELY can. Youd probably see a bigger boost in par using the original epistar LED's and upgrading the drivers to constant current ones then just changing to more modern chips and keeping the same shit drivers. You see a 15% or so increase in par as well as lumen output going from a 50-60hz magnetic HID ballast to a 19,000+hz digital one, and thats from not just same spectrum, the same BULB. The par reading between photostrobic drivers and constant current ones would be no different. Actually, far better considering 19,000 oscillations is still a lot lower then constant DC drive. Your changing to a spectrum that doesn't have nearly as many peaks in the PAR ranges it just pumps out more overall. You really need to upgrade the drivers as well with these chips to take advantage of their superior efficiency fully. Your probably seeing at best a 10-20% increase in overall PAR output, which on a $150 dollar light, is NOT worth the 150 dollar "upgrade" change to CC drivers with the cobs and youd probably see almost double the PAR ratings at same distance from the same wattage, but at that point youve just used the old light as a stencil for an entire build.

I did pop the top and their is no labeling on the drivers in either the 400 or 900 series I have.Half of the chips have burnt out on both.Trying to use what's left so the rest of the light doesn't go to the trash.

hadnt had a chance to chop it up with ya guy . new to the cob scene , so my question here is would i need a mean well driver to run the smart led cob 50w lights . reason being is bcuz in the sales specs on the ebay pg it says that the chip is on the board / light itself , theres no heatsinks/fans /framing etc.. im about to build something out of it , if i can figure out if i need a driver or not . thx u rock

We would need to know more about what you're building and what kind of cob you have. Need all the specs for the cob and a datasheet would be ideal.

+Mark Cates I've been rooting my clones under a 12w quad band led. for one and a half year now :) they have a nice root development after a couple weeks and are ready to be repotted. works fine for me in my small tree stage grow room. www.420magazine.com/gallery/member-galleries/p1003554-20151004-102347.html

Can you run cree cxb3590s @ 800ma? You've inspired me to convert all my blurple to cob or lm561c strips if I can. I have quite a few different ones to try.

I used 2 cobs directly on the heatsink with one driver. But its too bright for my small space where the plants spend their first week. Is there an affordable driver with the same specs but where I can adjust the amperage?

Any idea what the current is of those drivers? I’m assuming less than 1.0 amps because xpe have max current of 1.0amps but thought I’d ask.

Hey i have a mars 2 900w it blew out a strip of lights so i assume that one of my drivers is bad. mars has told me that they'd send me a new driver i just was unsure of if i could replace it myself. After seeing this i think i could pull it off. but i'd much rather convert my light to a cob light like this. what would change in regard to whats needed and of course whats needed to be done. would this be way too hot for a 4x2 tent? i actually ran the 900 in it with only 5ft of ceiling space a 6 inch exhaust fan at about half and did really well with no led burn thanks to a low scrog. i was well over a g a watt of actuall. thank you so much, love your channel btw.

+growmau5 sorry my real question was regarding the ability to do this conversion with a mars2 900 and how many lights and other parts would be needed to accomplish it. thank you so much for getting back to me btw i really appreciate it.

+BukkitViper fasttech.com cxa 2530 $10 a piece they are smaller and it is a 4000K version, but with some red leds or a $20 bridgelux "full spectrum"(380nm-840nm) cob from aliexpress.com to boost the red and blue spectrum a bit more I think it will be fine for flowering
