Zone 9 (Your location) could be considered a Cold Climate when you're comparing with zone 10 and above. :p ... lol ... I am growing Guava in zone 7B (Georgia), they are doing very good with amazing growth (yet, I have to take them inside when temp reaches near 34 (by the time 32 F, Plants are already inside). However, I'm curious, in zone 9, do you all get 'frost' ?

MrChoudhury I am in zone 8a and I am growing them in pots also. What do you feed them and how often? Have you had fruit ?

@@albongardens3199 Just once and only a couple. But I think that was because I didn't have any pollinator that time, now I do ... hopefully they will flower. I just feed compost that I make using my kitchen scraps.

I think you being in 8a, you are already well ahead of me. I'm just seeing those trees leafing out and barely getting started. This frustrates me because by the time my fruits ripe, it cold spell would be upon us! Man, sometime I just want to move out and go to a subtropical place like Florida (or Hawaii :))

@@ichoudhury007 I would love to be in zone 10 and be able to grow tropicals outside. We have been getting early cold spells the last two years and losing a lot of crops before ripening :/ I will need to be better prepared this year

You are talking about growing guavas in cold climate but do not mention where, which zone, you happen to be. I am in NJ, zone 6b, and am very interested in growing guavas in containers so I can move them indoors for the winter. I have two small pink guava plants, about a foot tall, growing in 1-gal containers. A couple of questions if you don't mind: how big a container they have to be eventually moved into in order to sustain a tree that would produce fruit. Also, do they drop all their leaves during winter, and would they survive if moved to a dimly lit walk-in basement where it gets to around 50-55 degrees during winter. Thanks for sharing your experience with guavas.

You prune late, why wait for it to grow long shoots if you gonna cut it back, as soon as it reach the point where you was gonna cut, top it,then and so all that energy can grow out the two shoots that same period thus have it grow thicker and bushey, your wasting plant energy on worthless long vegetation growth.

When you have a tree that's special and giving great fruit, take a cutting so you have a back up, just in case.

Someone please tell him to plant a pineapple guava if he has problem with frost as they are the most hardy. Or just buy a potted lemon guava and keep it inside during winter.
