Does it take full sun (afternoon sun ) in Phoenix ?

Hi Ramya, thank you for watching and commenting! Yes, this tree, in The Green Yard, does get full afternoon sun in the summer. From my understanding and experience, after the first year, Mulberries can take and thrive in our full sun here in Phoenix. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Hello, thank you for watching and commenting! Yes, I have heard that as well from the nursery where I got the tree. It seems like they will fruit in year 3 to 4. I'll probably do an update video next spring and hopefully I have fruit then.

Hello @jesuswarnedusaboutthem7710, thank you for watching and commenting! I appreciate you mentioning eating the flowers of the empress tree. I actually did not know you could do that until your comment. I have not tried them yet but definitely thinking about it. If you're in the Phoenix area and looking for a large shade tree you can't go wrong with the Royal Empress. It is definitely the fastest growing tree that I have in The Green Yard. You could also plant a mulberry tree too, they are pretty fast growing and create beautiful shade while also providing fruit. There are other options out there too like Sisso, Ficus, Tipu, etc. I just don't have any experience with these trees so I can't really recommend them.

Hi Jeff, thank you for watching and commenting! That is great to hear. I was hoping that I would get some fruit last year but it could be that I just need to wait a little longer. I'm really excited to try the fruits! Oh I bet, we have a lot of birds that frequent The Green Yard so I'm sure they're going to be excited for it to fruit too!

i ordered a little stick pakistan mulberry tree and it's on it's 2nd year in ground but didn't produce any fruit/pollen, just leaves? it's already over 10 ft tall; does it take a few years? my other mulberry trees started producing literally the spring after i planted them

Hello, thank you for watching and commenting! That's awesome that your Pakistan Mulberry is already over 10 ft tall. So, from my research and asking my local nursery, the answer is that it depends. It depends on how the tree was originally propagated. If it was grafted, typically the tree with produce the first year. If it was grown from a cutting, it usually takes 2-3 years to produce and if it was grown from a tissue culture it can take over 4 years for it to produce. Mine is grown from a tissue culture and I have still yet to have any fruit, even after almost three years in the ground. I'm hoping I get some fruit next year! Good luck with your tree and if you have any more questions let me know.

If the mulberry tree was cloned from the mother plant via tissue culture (not via rooted cutting). Then your tree will take between 5-6 years to fruit. Mine is also on its 2nd year without fruiting at about 6 feet tall.

Hello again, I just replied to your other comment. Yes, I would say that, if you let them grow and don't prune them, Mulberry trees are a good shade tree. We have two large male mulberry trees that are around 60 years old that supply the shade for the food forest part of The Green Yard. Let me know if you have any other questions.

I heard the roots can be invasive..and will lift up concrete fence
@thegreenyardaz

Hello, thank you for watching and commenting! From both my experience and from hearing from other growers, it really just depends on how the tree is watered. Proper watering is generally deep watering that pushes the water into the ground. This can be done by building a berm around the tree and then allowing water to fill up that berm. For The Green Yard, we have flood irrigation, which is a form of deep watering, so I do not have any issues with invasive roots since all roots go into the ground where the water is located. If the trees are shallow watered and not deep watered the roots will be at the very top of the soil and may even come out of the ground to access that water. Hope this helps, let me know if you have other questions.

That is strange you have gotten no fruit this past spring. Not to scare you, but my Pakistan's leaves look significantly different. I hope yours isn't the root stock?

Hi, thank you for watching and your comment! Yeah, I thought I would get some fruit the second year in the ground but it sounds like it could take longer. Hopefully I get some this year! It could be root stock, I know some varieties of Pakistan Mulberry are grafted while other are air layered. This one didn't seem to have a graft when I bought it but maybe. I guess I'll find out when I get fruit.

@@thegreenyardaz Could be that. I have had 3, all grafted and all fruited in the first year. I am planning on doing some air layering my self to see how those grow 👍

I was just about to comment as well that my leaves look different from the one in this video, mostly about how big your leaves look compared to mine. I bought and planted the tree from Shamus in early OCT 2020 and still haven't had any fruit yet, but hoping to get some in the spring to early summer in 2023. I have been worried as to why it hasn't given me any fruit yet, specifically was hoping for at least a couple earlier in 2022. All my leaves don't drop either, but i feel a lot if it is barely hanging on and i pull it a little it drops easily after heavy winter. I don't fertilize much either. I actually was wondering if you do any kind of pruning for your Pakistan mulberry tree. I had tremendous growth each year. Actually, over 14 feet so far and a lot of horizontal growth as well. I pruned most of intersecting and crossing branches, as well as took away from the extreme height. I didn't want to doo much much thinking it may affect the potential fruit set for the coming fruiting season.

Are you getting any fruit set yet?
@thegreenyardaz
Жыл бұрын
Hi Vicente, thank you for your comment and for watching! Unfortunately no fruit set yet, so it looks like I'm going another year without my Pakistan Mulberries. I actually spoke to the nursery where I bought it from and they said that this tree is grown from a tissue culture and they can take many years to set fruit. Grafted trees are much faster, in fact they had some newly grafted trees at the nursery that were already setting fruit when I was there. So, I know for next time to get a grafted Mulberry instead of one from tissue culture. Hopefully we'll get some fruit next year though!
