If you talk to any group of people across the board in any culture you will hear stories of people waking up in the night and going to the toilet in a cuboard or in the corner of their room or in the passage in a semi state of sleep or in a drunken stupper at some point in their life. It's a funny story, an embarresing story, a familiar story. Many people even pee in their own bed dreaming that they are on the toilet. If you can tell us that you have investigated and found that there is ZERO evidence of this particular white student ever sleep walking or being under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident and additionally have a full character reference of him prior to this incident then you can start making accusations of racisim. It looks to me from the video that he is not in a fully awake state and that it is more likely that a total misunderstanding has taken place. If you ask someone what they are doing when they are sleep walking or intoxicated they will not make sense and could easily incriminate themselves. It is very sad that young people on mass are prepared to ruin a member of their own communities life for an action that anyone of them could be guilty of. It is even sadder that staff and parents are not doing a private investigation before going to social media to create an absolutely cruel spectacle of what appears to be a foolish young mans sleepwalking/drunken mistake.

Well, if Babalo forgives him, we must forgive him. His voice matters more than ours in this regard. Notwithstanding that, I believe if the student can acknowledge the error of his ways, and apologise genuinely, then he will do well for himself. He must not just say, "I apologise for what I did, or for urinating non your stuff"; he must call and condemn his actions by name, even if it is the grade R act. He must call it whatever it is called in law and ethics. We know a little bit of what he did (if the short video is anything to go by), but why and how come, we don't know? We all are guilty of many sins in life, and any act can be forgivable. I also find it fascinating that he did not choose the corridor, he did not choose any other room, he did not select a random house in the area, he did not jump off a bridge somewhere, so that we can see that the man acted temporarily insane and alcohol impaired him. He chose this action and this room. A sober guy went to drink. Let’s not forget that. Why did he not give him his phone or give him money or steal from him? Why did he choose the act he chose? If alcohol impairs people, why do drunk people seem to choose their actions wisely or choose foolish ones like driving? Why not try to sleep with your mom? Surely even when drunk, you would never make a move on your mother cos even when impaired like that, you do not lose all sanity and control of your mind. You kill someone while drunk, you serve time. He reasonably foresaw what might happen while sober, and he reconciled himself with any eventuality. In this case, if the university has rules against such actions, then they must act accordingly. An investigation, a quick one at that, because evidence is available, should take place. Teach the man. Show him why what he did is wrong. Imagine if there was no camera to record. The victim would be without any evidence of his allegation. Even now that he has evidence, he is the one who must prove beyond reasonable doubt what happened to him. Tough out there. We must not be quick to classify this act as R. We must not be quick to dismiss it as such either. We must not be quick to act and deal with it without following due processes. We must not be slow either. I hope this is not another case of the school being caught off guard for not having a policy in place to deal with such acts. This is not easy on anyone, I'm sure. Both men have families and loved ones who are conflicted in the matter. It is a pity that space and atmosphere are not created to acknowledge if the act is that sin of R, because you'll be condemned for life. It is also a pity that some are defending him by saying it is not an R act, but what they are really doing is to blur the line of what constitutes as that act or they are trying to defend their own R acts. It is equally a pity that room is not created for this to be seen as merely a horrible act. What if he thought he were doing this on his friend's stuff (hard cos it looks like he knew he was not there), but what if? It is also understandable that some people feel aggrieved that this act is covered more than the other immoral, criminal acts that go unrecorded. But we can't fix a wrong with another wrong. Let's call for al unethical, criminal actions by any ethnicity to be dealt with swiftly. We all need an impartial law, with lady justice truly blind folded. Some things will be done right in this instance, and a lot will be done wrong. Let's do the hard work of sifting through the noise and now allow ourselves to be drawn into it.

If a black student urinated on a white student's study material, would that kid also become known in the media as being a racist? While I was doing compulsory military service back in 1989, I was about the same age this kid was. A fellow white troop defecated in my bed. Since I myself am Caucasian, does that mean that white troop was being a racist against someone of his own ethnicity? What I see in the video is a kid being a jackass who rightfully should be expelled and a criminal case should be opened against him for breaking into another student's room, as well as damaging his property. I did hear Du Toit call Babalo a 'boy' in the video, while he was busy doing the deed. Does that mean we should remove the word 'boy' from the English vocabulary, because it has racial connotations? The video does not persuade me to believe this was racially motivated. What I see, is bullying, and not racism. I do however support the decision to expel this student, and he should be prosecuted accordingly. We expect our youth to become our future leaders, not our future bullies.

This is a cultural problem not racial. Boere's find this type of stuff funny, he would of done the same thing to a white student. Remember not too long ago, Boere students, force fed University workers, with pee and shit. Dehumanizing people is what they find funny. He should be expelled end of story.

It's being said:" Language is a Function of Culture". Maybe our Best Constitution in the world is not articulated very well to different populations with different languages in this country. Always English. Not everyone understands the Nitty gritty of this Constitution and it's bylaws. So, what we see is people we think understand better doing things that are opposite what we think the constitution says and get away with it. Hence all these killings of women and children, stealing money that's supposed to care for the poor in this country, corruption, continuous racism by some folks etc. The list goes on. People just do opposite. Why? Maybe there must be some time for our leaders to come to different south Africans in different areas and explain this constitution and all the rights to people in their home languages. Maybe this would be costly to do but the way things are right now! Anything positive may be employed. May God bless South Africans really we are good people and have percevered a lot but one day the Sun will shine, 🙏🌞✌️

I agree that this is totally unacceptable behavior. BUT if this student is expelled for racist behavior, then so should several of the Members of Parliament in the South African government. E.g. Julius Mulema. The same rules must apply to everyone!

The response of the White student gives hope of a better and united South Africa, speak less of Stellies. These issues have a bearing on one's background. We can only commend the boy and his stelling upbringing. Thank you to the Afrikaaner community that is also striving with us in creating a unified SA bcos it seems as if its just our call and not theirs. It hapoens in many facets of life even the land issue. We r always the only ones willing 2 negotiate and sacrifice but not them nd this is all about struggling 2 mantain the status quo of inequality. Im afraid a big segment of the ppl of color are getting tired of waiting 4 them 2 make uo their minds about the future of this country, just concerned about ppl like the one we've just heard, but if push comes 2 shove, they leave us no option...Thanks again! Its kind of healing in some way 2 hear an Afrikaaner boy speaking with honesty. I must say this action has traumatised the black community esp the older who have emerges from the brutal aoartheid past....Stellenbosch must ACT decisively!
